Have you ever been fired from your job?

It has been over seven months and I was fired from my job. I had never been fired before. Should I tell prospective employers that I was fired or should I tell them I resigned? I live in Indiana and I wrote my state senator and Indiana is an at will state. Employers can hire and fire at will. The company I worked for fired an employee OVER THE PHONE! Then they fought my unemployment. I thought I paid half of that and the employer paid the other half. I think the employer should have to pay the unemployment or give a valid reason for firing. Any thoughts?

I have never been fired from a job before, but you should have some kind of rights. You could go to unemployemtn and apply and if it is diputed, they will hold a hearing with the company and they will have to have a valid explanation as to why you were fired. You may not win, but it is worth a try. The company will have to submit documents that back up why they fired you and it will be reviewed. alot fo companies do not have to pay someone if they fire them, but they have to have a valid excuse for firing.

Steph, She did apply for unemployment according to her post. But she was turned down. Not sure if she had a hearing or not, but sounds like according to what the senator of Indiana said "the employer has the right to fire you". I think that stinks. I know I asked my sister who is an attorney and she said the same thing. You are employed at will and the employer can fire you for anything. I think that law needs changing.

Yes. I see that she did try for unemployment, but I was wandering if the employer showed up for a hearing since she got denied any unemployment benefits. I think alot of laws in Indiana stink. Sometimes what is good for the goose isn't always good for the gander. I know of some people who got fired and they deserved it, but they won against the employer for unemployment benefits.

Thats completely wrong if they didn't give you a valid reason for the firing. Usually the only time a compnay can do that is if they fire you within the first 3 months of your employment there. I would be honest during any interviews that you go to because if they check with your previous employer then you end up caught in a lie and that won't look good to a prospective employer....good luck in your job search

I agree. I was fired also and I live in Indiana. I think no matter where you live that employers should have to have a reason to fire a person. And I also believe that no one should be fired over the phone, unless they are not comming to work. That is just unprofessional. I would tell prospective employers that I was fired and then state the reason. Was it a personality conflict? Maybe you don't want to state here. But I think I would be honest with the prospective employer and they would appreciate your honesty. I would also get in there when interviewing I have never in my (how many years) been fired and I am really embarrassed over it. Good luck with your job hunt. Praying for you.
