Having extra pounds is no fun. I think appearance is important especially in the USA.

well, other employers actually gauge the person basing on the impression he/ she has left on them...and yes, appearance is one key..a person doesn't have to be handsome / beautiful, they just have to look presentable and confident..:)

yes, i think if you are over weight, there could be problems. some people have certain beliefs about being obese.

I think that physical appearance matters to different degrees. On a conscious level, I think that an interviewer definitely notices whether you are dressed appropriately and whether you have taken a moment to comb your hair. On a subconscious level, I think that physical appearance may influence an interviewer's opinion, but I think that in most cases, a candidate's qualifications and the interviewer's conscious decision making abilities take precedence.
