I'm curious what you do I mean I try to clean it the best way I can but the smell from the dampness in the carpet is making me sick! I only rent and haven't said anything as of yet for this is a constant thing that happens every time it rains. How bad is this for my kids? I cant keep affording to rent a steam cleaner does anyone has any suggestions?
Thank you all so much for your Time

I agree with the post #3 as sump pump sounds like what you need, we have one in our basement without it we would be flooded everytime it rains as we live in a area with poor drainage and lots of clay. That and the mold id so unhealthy for your family I agree it is a health issue to be reported if not taken care of by the landlord.

If you are renting, you should definitely say something to the property owner, it should be their responsibility to fix or at least manage. We own our home and just had to have it water proofed which was a ton of money, but it was the only way to fix our problem. Whenever we got water in our downstairs we ran two dehumidifiers (had to borrow one) and had a fan running to dry everything out. The trick is to dry it up as fast as possible so mold doesn't grow. After everything was dry, I got Arm & Hammer carpet stuff and dumped it all over the carpet, then vacuumed it up. It definitely helped the smell. I know exactly what you are going through. . .good luck!

In just about every house my husband and I have lived in , we have always had problems with water in the basement . I have never found a way yet to get the smell out of the basement as a result of this .
We went out and borrowed a humidifier from a friend of ours when we moved into the place we are in now because my washer and dryer are in the basement and we were getting mold from all the water . It did help a bit but not as much as I would have liked and it puts our power bill up each month because we have to have it running all the time .
My biggest worry isn't so much the smell but about all the mold it causes because the mold is making everyone so sick and I did complain to the landlord and he promised to do something about this but that was almost a year ago and he hasn't done anything about it yet . I don't believe he is taking us seriously because no one else had ever complained in the past about this .
I wish I could offer you more but have a hard time trying to deal with this myself .
Best of luck !!

Do you have any kind of landscaping done to help prevent it? We just bought a house, and it has a slight leak problem on one side of the basement when it rains really hard (it just rained 4 inches in about an hour here, and there was a little bit of water just in the basement bathroom). Anyway, our realtor suggested that we re-angle the little gravel things on that side of the house. I don't really know how to explain it. But it has the gravel box things all around the house. The realtor said that if we angle it so that it is higher by the house and slopes down, the problem should be fixed. He says that is what the landscaper told him when he just had something similar done at his own house.
