I have been entertaining the idea of getting a cat. However I'm afraid that my dog will not like it. She has been around cats before, but its been in been in situations where there other dogs around to distract her. If it was just her and the cat at home, I would think she would attack it.
Tell me what you think. Does your dog attack your cat? Do they get along? Did it take a while before they got along, or was it instantaneous?

first, this makes me laugh, and i have to tell you the story of our dog and our cat. First, there was Daisy. Daisy is a long haired chihuahua, who weighs about 6 pounds. Then we got Mao. Mao was a fuzzy, 20 pound, orange cat. LOL they pretty much ignored each other. *sad part* Two weeks ago Mao ran away. *sighs* However, that same day, (before we noticed he wasn't asleep under the bed in his usual spot, and there was a mao sized hole in the screen) we brought home Tika. Tika is a little 4 pound black cat. The first couple of days, any time daisy came near her there was hissing and growling. Less than a week later, i started to notice that our poor little daisy started to look extremely disheveled, and couldn't figure out why. My wife pointed it out to me later that day, Tika was waiting around corners and on top of furniture to ambush and maul Daisy!! It was so funny i almost fell out of my chair laughing. Now they play like they've known each other forever. The dog and the cat. daisy still looks rumpled, but at least now we know why!! So, moral of the story..some dogs and cats get along, it just might take a couple of days. I would recommend getting a kitten rather than an adult cat, that way the dog won't see it as competition (hopefully) and the cat won't already hate dogs.

I die laughing every time tika jumps daisy. it's worth it just for the show!! our problem right now, is we can't keep the cat out of the dog food, can't keep the dog out of the cat food. LOL But we're cat lovers, and we love daisy, so they had to learn to live together.

Hello.
My two boxers chase my two cats but don't hurt them. The cats kind of stay away from the dogs. What kind of dog do you have? Sometimes the dogs get rough with the cats and I tell the dogs off. Maybe you could keep the cat in a bedroom with a litter box and water until the dog gets use to the kitty.
Good luck
