Since past 15 days i have been suffering from a mild toothache and i did not paid attention to it because I am afraid of visiting a dentist. I just tried some home medicine viz. clove oil but it did not help much.
Since today morning, the ache has increased to an unbearable level and I have no other choice but to visit a dentist.
Have you ever been to a dentist? And if yes, how fearful was your experience?

Well ranjeetkolarkar you will have to do it! lol If you have toothache then something wrong is going on and it will not go away with home medicine. It can only get worse with time so better go early before it's too late. You will need a filling I think because it might be a cavity.
Yes I have been to the dentist myself many times and had cavities filled. I also went to the orthodontist to straighten my teeth.
The dentist I visit is an old man who is very good. I don't feel his needles because he prepares my gum so well. I am always afraid of needles and since I found that dentist I always go to him. Good luck ranjeetkolarkar!

I too am afraid of the dentist, even though i've had extensive work done. I know I shouldn't be afraid, however I feel that if i'm paying for something like that they should make me really comfortable e.g. gas me. Lol, I've always felt a scared patient isn't any good awake lol. I actually got so scared one time that the drill touched me tounge because I tried to push it involentarily out of my mout, it hurt very badly. I've been to a dentist to get about 2500.00 dollars worth of work done, and i'm not going back until that much needs to be done again. It is just too painful for me, and scary.

As a kid, I hate and feared the dentist - I even ran out of the building once. One day in my early 20s, I had a very bad tooth and told nobody about it because it would mean going to the dentist and the pain just grew worse and part of the tooth actualy broke away. I decided there and then that I would have to go or my other teeth may suffer too. So I went.
I talked to the dentist and told him of my fear and he said he understood because he had a fear himself of dentists. He took things very slowly for me, but told me the tooth was beyond repair would have to come out.
I focused on what I was feeling and shook and felt light-headed for a while, then suddenly it all just disappeared and I was totally OK with what he was doing.
As a therapist, I help people with this phobia and explain that they need to fully accept their fear and talk to their dentist because if they "try to be brave" it will only get worse. You really need to attend to painful teeth or they can cause other problems, but don't fear your fear. Feel the fear and let it be there, and you'll be surprised how you will master it, and it not you. :-)

So sorry to hear about your toothache. I have been to the dentist and go on a regular routine. I am not fearful of the dentist at all. I think if you go on a regular routine you won't have huge issues. I have some cavitities but nothing else (no root canels, or pulling of teeth).
Good luck with your toothache.

hehe. i know friends like you. they will only go to the dentist if the pain is so painful already that even painkillers won't make them sleep. last resort is they go to their dentist and have them pulled. but sometimes, they weren't being pulled but just dentists prescribe them some medicines to make the pain go away. and asked them to visit the dentist when the pain is gone to have it checked again. but they don't go back. always.

I used to be afraid of the dentist, but I like the one I've got now, and I rarely experience pain or even discomfort when he's doing anything with my teeth. It's funny, but my dentist is more afraid of hurting me than I am of getting hurt. I have to keep reasurring him that I'm ok when he's working on my teeth. I've had caps and crowns put in, and fillings. I go regularly to get my teeth cleaned, and I've gotten used to that too.
I think you will find that it will be a great relief to go to the dentist and get your tooth fixed. It will be over before you know it, and you can get an analgesic so you won't feel much. Do yourself a favor and go, and you will be rid of your pain.

hi.. i used to be afraid on showing up on dental appointments.. specially way back when i was a kid.. the nerves that supplies blood and nutrition to our teeth is called a free nerve ending.. and this nerve knows no other feeling but pain.. and this is usually called toothache.. toothache means something is wrong with that particular tooth. unfortunately only dentist can cure the pain. But i say there is nothing really to be afraid of.. the procedure of extraction is really frightening but with the technology of anesthesiolgy you won't feel anything.. once you feel pain it is best to consult your dentist right away..
once an infection has occured, there is a possibilty that the infection itself would spread to next tooth beside the infected one. so it's best to cure it right away.. but hey! i have a little tip for you.. dental check ups is much more easier than dental extraction or any dental procedure.. so give you this little effective tip.. you go and visit your dentist BEFORE an infection occurs.. the more regular your visit is the more you are away from infections that would give you a hard time to undergo another dental surgery or some other procedure.. so always go for an appointment..
i am a dental student now.. and i have overcome my fear by putting this on my mind.. "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE".. visit your dentist regularly.. it is better to have dental cleaning rather than rotten tooth extraction.. Dentists don't hurt you.. it is you who makes it painful.. remember.. "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE"..

I don't like going to any doctor. I fear them looking and poking with your body. I also have a bad teeth and almost all my teeth have either been pulled out or have filling in it. Last year I have two root canals and it's the worst you could have because everyweek you need to go back to the dentist to do it and it's not even 100% sure that the root canal they did is successful. So to avoid going to any doctor take care of your body. You avoid expenses and visiting them.

Goodluck and more power! =)

I'm not afraid to visit my dentist. My experiences so far during my visits there are quite alright. I just have to deal with the injections and other stuff if there's a real need to do that on my teeth than to suffer a toothache taht feels like a lifetime to suffer the pain. They're friendly human beings too so don't be afraid. It's for your own sake too. ;)

I've no problem to go to a dentist. I've an uncle that is a dentist and since I was a child I've no fear to go to a dentist, but I'm also very lazy to go.. and I've a lot of tooth problems only because I always think that I'm too busy to go..

Ibuprophen(advil) will help ease the pain, I had a severe toothache , nothing but advil worked, it eased it quite a bit, of course the dentist is always best but until you can get to a dentist try Ibuprophen.

I have been to the dentist many times. I find that going to the dentist is essentially painless. They freeze it up real good so there is no reason to be worried. I have had root canals, teeth extractions etc... and I never winced in pain once. :)
cheers,

I really agree that toothache is really painful. But if you are going to avoid the Dentist for the temporary pain, may be that will lead to some terrible long lasting pain in the future. Dont do that. Its always advisable to bear the temporary pain to avoid long time pain. This fact of life , is true even to this toothache problem.... Start now to Dentist.

I once went to a dentist who somehow managed to stick his whole hand in my mouth, split my lips and made a real mess and I was terrified to go back but then one day I had to and I went to the kindest most wonderful dentist who understood my fear and was just marvelous, you just have to find the right dentist and to be confident that they arent going to hurt you! Ask your friends and family if they have anyone that they could recomend you

I'll tell you my story then..It was only last year i had visited the dentist cause i was getting bleeding from gum. I had my x rays done as it wasn't an ordinary tooth that caused the bleeding. It was indeed a wisdom tooth so 'i had to get it remove', that's what i was being ordered by the dental surgeon. That was the most terrible incident of my life man. It was so painful i nearly got fainted. The wisdom tooth wouldn't the hell come out and he just dring dring dring dringggg in my mouth with dangerous devices. I couldn't even say it was painful, my whole mouth was filled with blood and i was afraid i could get my tongue cut. After that incident i ran to the hospital neardy and did a diclofenac injection...still it was terrible pain. I couldn't attend duty several days(1 week), couldn't eat rice as it would hurt, couldn't drink water also...i even hate to think about this now. My advice is unless you know who the dentist really is don't go. Ask friends who has been to him and ask how he usually performs. To go just blindly is like visiting hell!!!!
