In my boyhood, I used to be dissatisfied with my name, because it was not common or popular. It was just the name of a demi God instead of the supreme God. Nowadays, there is an equanimity and maturity with aging. In our country (India) we common people do not change our names, as we respect the names given by our elders. Exceptions are politicians, cine stars, cricketers and other guys who for the sake of luck and numerological lucky number, change their names or change the spelling of their names. In which country you live? Do people change their names frequently? Business, luck, legal, religious or other purposes?

Hmmm...I have a love/hate relationship with my name (Stephanie). Love it because it is rather nice and it means 'crowned one'. Hate it because it is far too common. In 2005-2006, my class had 3 girls named Stephanie, including me. There was a lot of confusion and inconvenience caused by this fact and we ended up addressing each other by our surnames just to minimize the actual confusion. However, I see no need to change my name because 1) it IS the name my parents granted me 2) I have grown used to it 3)its too much of a hassle. In Singapore from what I can tell, its not done too frequently...but people I've met so far who have changed their names did it for religious purposes.

Hi multisubj!! I am very much satisfied with my given name and I have no intention of ever changing it. Here in the Philippines, very few people actually intend to change their names officially. Maybe, this is because changing their names in the national statistics office of the Philippines is a very long process, and it is also very expensive. Nevertheless, showbiz personalities change their names unofficially. These names they prefer to call 'screen names' - names which they use to carry their identities on TV. Celebrities do this when their real names sound ugly or less appealing. B-)
