There's an overload somewhere. It could be as simple as the wattage you're putting in is too high, try switching to a lower wattage and see if there's a still a problem. If so, I'd recommend contacting an electrician for help if you're an owner and contacting your landlord if you rent.

I agree. A wattage that is too high is going to give you problems. That's why the socket has a maximum limit posted on it.
If that's not the problem, then it is the wiring. It's too old to handle any more, and it needs to be replaced.

You need to get an electrician in. It used to happen in out hall and we ended up having to get the place rewired. A bulb would shatter in it every few weeks and it was so dangerous.
