I just love this movie. I watch it every time it comes on. But there is one thing that puzzles me. Who else thinks that Idgy and the old lady telling the story is the same person? I think she is talking about her own life. Any thoughts?

if you read the book, it's absolutely clear that ninny and idgy are two different people. ninny is idgy's sister in law. but i think the filmmakers actually set out to make it look as if ninny and idgy are the same person. i just bought the movie on dvd, and there are a bunch of extra/extended scenes, it's pretty cool.

I never have been able to figure this out for sure. The movie sends mixed messages about it. If you pay close attention at the very beginning of the movie when the old lady is talking to Kathy Bates for one of the first times, she says that she was married to Idgy's brother...I think his name was Cleo. You have to pay close attention, but she says it for sure. If this is the case then the old lady cannot logically be Idgy. I sometimes wonder if maybe she is telling part of her own experiences and part of Idgy's but using Idgy as the character in her stories. I have never read the book, but it might be more clear on this...who knows!

I didn't even realize that this movie was based on a book until the last time I watched it and read the credits. I just might read the book because as we all know the book is always better. Thanks.

I also love "Fried Green Tomatoes". I love Jessica Tandy and she always brings so much into whatever character she plays. I feel that Ninny (Jessica Tandy) could very well have been Idgie and telling of her own life. She still had spunk in her later years, enough to inspire Evelyn to make positive changes. Sounds a lot like Idgie, huh? lol Either way, I guess not knowing is part of the intrigue.

I have thought Idgy and the Ms. Threadgoode are one and the same ever since I first saw the movie. I love the movie, but I don't think the book is good. Rarely do I ever choose the movie over the book, but I've not ever finished the book. It just doesn't keep me interested.

I too have watched it everytime it came on..So much that I went out and got the DVD lol the weird thing is that when ever I thought about that movie it would play on television few days to a week later lol but yeah that used to puzzle me too every time that I watched it because of how she reacted it "seemed" like they were the same person. Love this movie too though. Have a nice day!

I remember this movie! I got to watch it on television, but unfortunately, I didn't catch the beginning. I loved it. THe way it looked to me, Idgy and the old lady were the same person. I'm glad I came across this post, I've always been meaning to get me a dvd, somehow I kept forgetting. Putting it on my notepad.
