Should mobile phones be banned in schools ?

Do you see any point to a child taking a mobile phone to shcool ? There are payphones for the chidlren to use or they can always go to the office and use the phone there if they need something but these days children as young as five are walking around with mobile phones where ever they go . What reason would a child have to take a mobile phone to school ? What are your views on this ?

Are you and me twins?? LOL We just think alike! That is scary. They say everyone has a twin - you must be mine. LOL I went to school and did not have a phone and I seemed to manage just fine. In fact we did not have a phone at home till I was in (just guessing) 7th grade or so. I think cell phones should be banned at school. they are there to learn not to chit chat on the phone so there is no reason to have them there. I do however understand them having cell phones when they are away at school activities. In our area some of the kids have to ride the bus for two hours just to get to school. I know I was one of those kids.

Haha you have said this different times and we do seem to think alike but I think you are probably a much better cook then me lol . I agree cell phones are useful but when it comes to phones ringing in class I can see how this would become a pain for the teachers as they are there to learn and this would be so disruptful to a class . Thank you for your response :)

With all of the problems that our teachers are having with children text messaging one another in class makes me want to say yes we need to ban children from taking cell phones to school. But then I also think about the school shootings that happen. I would want a child that has locked themselves in a room to avoid being shot to be able to call for help. I am trying to look at both sides of the issue. Yes cell phones do make it harder for the teachers to control the classroom setting but in case of an emergency I would like to know that the children had a cell phone to call for help.

I do not allow my daughter to take her cell phone to school with her. I do know at our school if the phones go off the child loses their phone and the parents have to go to the office to collect it themselves. I think that is a good rule. I do know that way too many of my daughter's friends take their phones to school and text each other all day. They make sure to put it on vibrate so the teacher can't hear it. So sadly the no phones on during school is not working. I think that cell phones have their place however I do not think they belong in school.

That is the problem having the phone in school is too tempting to put on vibrate and still text message and then the children are not paying attention to what they should . There is a time and place but school doesn't seem to be the place where one would need a phone unless it was a school function that would not be holding any classes and your child needed to get a hold of you to pick them up or something but even then they could use the office phone or the pay phone . Thank you for your response .

I believe that a child should carry a cell phone everywhere they go when they are not accompanied by an adult that they can trust. No, we did not have cell phones back in our day, but things were not as crazy as they are now either. That being said, the cell phone should be turn off during school hours and at lunch and recess. If a parent needs to get ahold of them, they can leave a message. I have not yet witnessed it, but I just got a visual of kids walking through the halls of the school, talking on the cell phone and being late for class and the phone ringing in class. The last time I was in college was in 2000. I was taking a Psychology class and the teacher made it very clear that he did not want any cell phones ringing in his class. The very next day, a girls cell phone rang and he kicked her out of the class for the entire semester, just as he had promised he would.

I think cell phones should be banned in a lot of places, some days I get so agrevated just watching people useing the phone everywhere I go. I at first thought they would be good for an emergency if the children were away from home, but it seems they cant go 2 min without chatting with someone. I see no reason why a child needs a phone at school its as you say there are pay phones and the office, and the parents can always call the school if the child is needed , just like in the days before cell phones came along.

In earlier days we used to go to school..wen our parents buy a chocolate for us..Then what we know is a small choclate relationship in goin to school..if we cry of not goin to school our parents will give a chocolate and say go to school..then the usage of cell is not there may be 2 or 3 in 100..but now a days 99 0f 100 have cells ...parents are givin cells to children to talk to thier relatives and creating d environment..where children are feeling it as compulsary...Parents shuld change first..We are seeing day to day research about how cell signalls can harm our body parts..school authoriteis shuld ban usage of cells in thier campus..It may b for teachers or students...they have to do this by putting jammers in the school....Wat do u feel..Am i right or do i need to change my views?

I don't thing that the sell phones should be banned of school. I can't understand what is the problem in my country the kids are using them when they are in brakes and that doesn't make their learning go down. The brakes between classes are for the kids to rest for example my rest is to listen some rap and what is the problem in that time to use cell phones. When the class started they just need to turned off or the teacher will get it.

There is no reason for a child to take a phone to school. They are there to learn not to talk with others or to text message. I know a few said "Let them take it but keep it in their locker", nice to say but the schools around here do not have lockers. They have to carry everything with them in their backpacks. So the phone would be with them. Also during school hours the parents can get a hold of them via the office. All the classrooms here have phones in them so a child can get a hold of a parent if they really need to. There is no valid reason for a child to have the phone at school. Cell phones are not toys, they should not be status symbols, and they should be used only as needed.

No, they shouldn't be allowed to have them in classes. However, I think they should be able to have them in their lockers or use them during lunch time. It is not always good to have the mobile phone at school because it is used as a distraction such as: texting in class, using the phone in class and all that. It is pretty annoying I must say. Have a nice day. Pablo

Absolutey should be banned. They are WAY too big of a distraction. Even for me and I'm 46. As a teacher myself....of 5-6 year old who are too young to have cell phones....I would be very frustrated if I taught older kids and they had their phones at school. I can't even believe that anyone would allow this. Do they need a phone for an emergency? Nope, not at school. We all did it without phones.

for me i dont agree to that. i mean if i would have my own child i will not give him/her mobile phone unless they have reach the age that i think they will really be needing one because mobile phone can also be used as an instrument for cheating during exams.and it's not practical also.

As to my case, I allow my children to bring their mobile phones in school as long as they don't violate the school rules. For example, there are schools, colleges and universities who don't allow students to bring mobile phones. -For one mobile phones disturb classes and classes get distracted. -There are also instances of hold-ups and snatching which is a big trouble and a great risk to the children's lives. As to answer the question, children who take their mobile phones in school are of great advantage to the communication to their parents. Absolutely there is nothing wrong in taking these gadgets in school, as long as students will follow the rules and students, as well as parents must know the pros and cons of taking mobile phones in school.

I dont think that they should have mobiles in school. Its ridiculous, like you said they can go to the office. They have enough to learn, playing with the phone which is what they probably do is only a distraction.

I dont see any thing wrong with this, If a child wants to bring there cell to school I think they should be allowed to, But I also think that during class time they should have it on vibrate or turned off so that they dont get a call and disturbe the rest of the class. But other then that I see nothing wrong with it.

That's a very nice proposition. Mobile should not be allowed in schools. If every parent buys one handset for every ward, they would in turn be spoiling their children's future. Children love to meddle with mobile phones and this would certainly affect their concentration in studies.

I would say, don't bother. Don't bother because kids are going to find ways to "smuggle" them in anyway. The better way to handle this issue would be to be open about it. Allow them to bring their toys but ask them to be responsible young adults and not use them in class.

Well, I dont know.. But I strongly disagree for banning mobile phones in school. Honestly, the school that I graduated to have this systematic rule of not bringing our mobile phones with us and it sucks!! Our school is big and if i have a friend to communicate, its really difficult! I have to look for that person in the whole campus and it's so tiring. Also, not all schools have pay phones.
