Falling Into The Wrong Hands

For as long as I can remember now I've always kept a daily diary/journal logging my thoughts, feelings, moods and what I've done in the day, it's quite open and descriptive and it has helped to write down things for me to remember, positive things to look back on for when I get old and grey!
Trouble is, what if my diaries fell into the wrong hands, or someone read them? I have thought about this more lately because I was naive to tell things to people which have been used against me.
Do you write a diary, if you do are you worried that they could fall into the wrong hands? Thus putting a proverbial noose around your head
I find it therapeutic and I enjoy writing whats happened to me on a day to day basis, I could lock them up and as yet no one has ever read them.
When I die I won't matter who reads them but until then am I taking a risk by writing too much will could incriminate me? (Don't worry Wolfie is not an axe murderer btw) LOL
Diaries a good thing or bad?

I did make the mistake of leaving my diary open instead of taking it upstairs, as I write it beside my computer in the kitchen, my housemate read it and it was about him, I had to talk my way out of it, it was close but I got away with it, it taught me a valuable lesson LOL!

Yhe one thing I don't want to do that I am now old and bald is be able to look back and relive all the stupid things I did when I was young.

I've only ever kept a diary once in my life .. I was about 13-14 .. as I am fairly lazy with writing I had made up my own shorthand .. my Mother .. (GRRR) .. read my diary .. decided the various shorthand initials related to boys (wtf) .. and marched me off to the headmaster of my school .. she never listened to a word I said in excplanation .. simply boxed me round the ears for being cheeky to her (GRRR) .. and demanded the school do something ..
Luckily for me .. I also used the same shorthand in my school rough books .. and this was produced to prove to her I wasn't doing anything 'bad' .. all I got was an icy stare .. how dare I make her look little in front of the headmaster .. and a flippin' good hiding for my pains .. grrrrrrrrrr
From that day I hated my mother (even more than I did, sigh, long story .. you don't want to know) .. and never wrote a word more in a diary ..
So .. now for you and your diaries .. well diaries are a wonderful source of information for when you write your biography .. it can be very cathartic writing things down to read later .. but the written word is a liability .. if you are worried someone could come and read them and get the wrong idea .. buy a little wall safe .. (I have a spare one going very cheap) .. and lock them away ..

Well I guess if keeping the diary is therapeutic for you, then it can only be a good thing, - just be very sure to keep it locked away where no one else can see it. Personaly, I have't kept a diary since I was about 14,- and then it was ony full of boring stuff like hair and dental appointments. If I did decide to keepone, I would probably write it in Russian, which means no one in my day to day life could read it - but I honestly haven't got the patience for it!

It can be a good thing and a bad thing for the good thing is you can look back and see what you have accomplished in your life and the bad thing is someone can look in it and find some things about certain things that they wouldn't wanted to know. and another thing is when you are gone and someone find their book and reads it and turn into a movie about Wolfie's life! Oh don't worry I know that you are not a axe murderer LOL, I think I know you better than that. LOL.

i started writing diary when i was 10 years old. but in 2002 i watched a movie where it showed that how a diary can spoil some once life. the day after i burnt all my diaries and began writing it on ms word.
this make me feel secure. why don't u try it. as this information is only for me and need not be known to others, which means that i can always go throw my past.
it is a sure and safe way.

lol for me diaries are good been that i get to write about everything that happened to me without entertaining any fears about it. I think i guard it jealously with my life so that no one can see it, because there are something i wrote about my parents, friends and people in general which might not go down well with them should they read it from my dairy.
I am not worried about my dairy getting into the wrong hands cause like i said i keep it were no one can sniff it out. I think dairies are to be kept from the preying eyes of people who might want to pokenose into your affairs

I do not keep a diary as I would not want anyone finding it and as I live in a small flat it would be difficult to hide.
I made the mistake years ago to keep a diary when I went to Israel for 3 months.
I wrote down everything and kept it once I returned. Soon after I met my now prtner and one night he found this diary and read it. It was not for his eyes and it was wrong for him to do so, and it did end up in a bit of an argument and him judging me on what I got up to.
I explained to him that what I did before I met him had nothing to do with him and it was resolved. However, I would not want to go through that again and as I am quite an emotional wreck sometimes I could end up writing things down I would regret if anyone got their hands on it.
I hope yours is under lock and key Wolfie!!

I think they are a good thing because you can monitor your thought patterns and see how you evolve and how your destiny unfolds..It seems to me similar in drawing a map that can get you from a to be. This is the ssame as a diary, it can help navigate you through the trials and tribulations of daily living. So no I wouldn't be a fraid lol as I don't exactly work for the CIA or Blackwater lol hahha.

I've always seen diaries as a good thing although I have never managed to successfully keep to one.
It would be good to jot my thoughts down so the future could see my thoughts, as I've read my father diaries and fond it interesting to gather his thoughts and jog back into the past etc.
It's good from where I'm standing.

I should actually keep one :/

You should keep them out of peoples sight as people may get tempted if they see them. If no one knows they are there they can't get tempted can they? People can misunderstand what you write about them or read something you wrote about them ages ago so diaries are not always a good thing.

I think that it can be a good thing so that people can have an idea of who you were when you die, but it can also be bad because like you said " what if it gets into the wrong hands"? That will be a problem. I think that you should be able to have your own code so that noone can understand what is written in the diary.

For me diaries is a good thing and also at the same time a bad thing because it really helps you remember the good times you sepnt in the past and also the bad times you have gone through. But for me, diaries are still a good thing because you can't really think about the bad things that you've been through because for you it's already nothing and your can't hardly think about it anymore and for the good memories written, those will stay and will really give you a cheer everytime you read it. Bad things on your diary is just nothing.

believe it or not i was just going to ask the same thing today the reason is
i live with my fiance and i have been keeping a diary continuously for 6 years now and find it very relaxing and it's become a friend of mine..
No matter how happy or sad or excited or busy i am i never forget to enter the day's event in my diary*
This past few weeks i have been very sad and depressed and the reason for my depression are my fiance and his kids which are my stepsons if you've read about me at all u'd know that i'm 27 and live with my fiance and his kids who i find are very rude to me at times and my fiance really spoils them silly..
Well this is the small fear i live through everyday that he may read it again.......YES HE DID READ IT WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE AND BROKE MY TRUST IN HIM!!!!!!
and so i feel he may do it again cos we are again going through a difficult in our lives and i am writing in my diary about him and his kids and and feel he might go through it sometime when i am not at homw i cannot lock it but keep changing it's place and no one's allowed to enter my room in my absence..
Keeping a diary is a good thing and i know it'll be difficult to stop writing like giving up a friend who's so close to the heart.. i'll burn it all someday or even give it to my closest granchild if i ever have one..
Sorry it's too long but i'm glad u asked the wuestion i may get some answers and help by reading this as well..

i thin diaries or journals are a good thing for some people. i personally don't really keep one. i just amm too afriad of exactly what you are talking about...someone finding it and reading it. That would be the worst thing possible. SO i generally jst keep it all in.

I think if writing a diary of your thoughts , feelings and /or activities help you then it mus(I'm too lazy!) but if I did and was worried that someone else would read it I would keep it hidden away , preferably under lock and key but at least where someone is unlikely to come across it! xxx

I have kept a journal for many years, in fact, have many of them. It is therapuetic to write down thoughts and feelings.
I found out that my husband read my journal, and it made me feel uncomfortable and exposed. There wasn't anything really negative that he could accuse me of, it was just my deepest thoughts and feelings, and I feel even with a spouse a person needs some privacy.
I started keeping a journal on my computer, he never uses the computer, has no clue how to even turn it on, and even if he did, I have it password protected.

Well, wolfie, I have kept a diary-off and on- for many years. I do it for many of the same reasons you do. They are a good thing because some of us are forgetful. I always try to abide by the truism that you should never put down anything in black and white that you wouldn't want to be seen by anyone. Having said that, I feel that if you write highly personal and intimate things in your journal, you should probably keep it under lock and key.
