why is it so important to be skinny? i dont mean thin and healthy, i mean like waif thin?? what is with the newest trend to be ultra skinny? i dont think that it is healthy or attractive. nicole richie is one of these ultra skinny people. i think that kelly ripa looks too thin now too. courtney love too. what is up with being way too skinny?
i am thin, 108 lbs and 5 foot 3 inches. this is healthy for me. if i were under 100 lbs like these women i would look unhealthy. some of these people are taller than me and thinner than me. i just dont get it!!
what do you all think about this really super skinny trend??

I asked my mom once when being skinny became the most popular thing. She said it when Twiggy appeared on the scene. She became popular and people in the industry began to pay more attention to those with her body type. With TV expanding to so many avenues, more people are exposed to this prejudice and it sadly becomes the norm.

You're mom is so right on that. Twiggy was the first one to really make it big with that super skinny look. If you ever want to see her she does a little guest spot in the Blues Brothers. She plays the woman at the gas station. Her measurements though during her career were:
31AA-22-32 (at age 17)
32-23-32 (during peak of her 60s modeling career)
32B-24-32 (in 1976 at age 27)
36B-20-33 (measured in 1986)
(Source: Celebrity Sleuth magazine)
Her height is 5'6. I don't know how skinny she was but you looked at her and she looked like she was just a little girl. You can see some pictures of her here:

yes..twiggy was the start of all of this. i remember my mom telling me about her too.it is hard to compete with the media about this too. my daughter is naturally skinny so i dont have to worry about it now but if during puberty she starts to gain weight, i imagine it will be a hard topic due to the media's influence on young girls.

Sadly women are their own worst enemy and it seems that the competition among these women is to do with their size.
However, if we look at reality are there many women who do fit into this Lolly on a stick syndrome. Some how I do not think so.
We seem to get through life alot happier than alot of these celebs who put all their success down to their weight.
In fact, for me, these men can have them as at the end of the day it does not prove they have the best of relationships, actually their love lifes are quite sad.
Posh, the skinniest woman around-husband cheats
Jennifer Anniston-Husband cheats
Paris Hilton-Sad and in jail
Britney Spears-Just sad
Madonna-Sad
I could go on but I will stop.
Is it the be all and end all for all women to feel they have to be thin. Well I think 'NO'.
We meet the person we love and stay with them whatever size we are, we are just not as sad as what the media believes we should look like. And thank goodness this isn't reality!!

Very good point. Just because they are super skinny doesn't make them any happier. Actually I have to wonder if it's just the opposite considering how their lives are.

I think its really dangerous if they are harming themselves. I am 5 foot 2 and weigh 42 kgs. I am really stick thin and people call me annorexic. I have been this way for many years. It is horrible sometimes and I feel really self concious about it.

I just had my son two months ago and with summer pretty much here I am really starting to feel the pressure to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I don't want to be 90 pounds, I just want to look decent in a bikini and I want to be able to fit into my summer clother from last year. I think the big obsession with being skinny is having to look as good, if not better, than those perfect bodies you see at the beach. It is possible to lose weight and be happy with your looks, you just have to have dedication and you need to do it in a healthy way.

Media is to blame for the skinny craze. Always has and always will be. They keep trying to get the "larger" woman into the spotlight but that always seems to die out so fast. Your so right about it being unhealthy but I think too skinny doesn't look all that great either.

media is the blame and it is sad that young girls think that if celebrities do it that is the right thing to do.

I agree. What the **** is wrong with having some extra weight as long as you're healthy? The looks? I'm sure that they're just egotystical and think that all fat people are unattractive, when they're the ones liking the ultra skinny people. I would much rather be fat than being really skinny.

i am not a really skinny person and i love my figure. but i am glad that i am not as skinny as those girls. plus, they might be not eating right at all anymore... starving themselves just to look that thin. for me, i love to eat. maybe, my metabolism's just working fast for me. lucky me.
and i think your weight is just right for you. for as long as you don't feel unhealthy, then, be it! good for you.
i think these celebrities think that they will look better if they are that thin. but less they know is that people don't like to look at so bony girls. gosh.. what's going on on earth?

This is the effect of the total media campaign. Just bussiness. All theese models, all theese films stars...
and the propaganda of the perfect proportions:-( Actually each body construction is individual and this is not suitable and possible for all of us to have for example Angelina Jolie`s body. It`s better to choose our individual diet what helps us to feel healthy and dont to be in stress when we see other`s body.

yup. most of the time, the media is to be blamed. they usually put those sexy thin models on the screen telling the people that she's perfect and pretty and sexy. and viewers think that the media is right. envious as people are, they try everything to be thin, too when they know it's not fit for everyone.

We have the designers and photographers to blame as well as the models on this. The models for agreeing and vieing to wear these outfits that only someone who is too skinny can wear. The industry needs to change and start showing more and more healthy sized women. I'm not necessarily saying they should show full figured women but they should have women who are the right height/weight proportion. When models are turned down for a shoot when they are 5'8 and weigh 108 pounds something is wrong. (Yes this does happen. They are told to go and lose weight) It's down right silly but more importantly it's dangerous for these women to be that skinny. They do put their health at risk if not more so then those who are a few pounds over weight.

I’m not sure either- But it is bad! These super skinny girls- Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton- are role models for young girls- I think it is terrible- Skinny is fine but super skinny is bad- I wish that these girls were not role models- I tell my daughter all the time that they are not special- But when you see models and actresses that are waif thin- that is what she sees and her friends also- I personally think it is ugly-

I agree with you , I am five feet two and a half inches and weigh one 114 lbs and find that I am much too small as it is . I am not healthy and I know I am not and all one has to do is look at me to realize that . Although I have been able to gain some weight as I used to be under 100lbs and looked like I needed to be in a hospital all the time . There is way to much emphasizes on the size of a person rather then how healthy a person is and this is sending across a really bad message to our younger generation that are constantly being on diets trying to look as small as us .
My daughter is 15 and weight 90 some pounds , she is problably about five feet and is incredibly tiny , yet my niece who is almost six feet is trying to get down to 90 pounds because she wants to look like my daughter . No matter how much I tell her that she would not look good that is what she is striving for because all the kids in my daughters class want to be her size because to them it is the ideal weight . They are not looking at the fact that my daughter is way to small for her size , even though she eats really well , she is still too small .

my daughter sounds like yours. she is very tall and skinny. she eats and eats and just doesnt gain weight quick enough. she is now 10 and weighs 65 lbs. so i dont have to worry about media's skinny attitude with her right now.
some people just have trouble gaining weight just like some have trouble losing weight. it is a matter of ones own body type and metabolism. my mother cant gain weight at all. she tries and tries and just cant.

I believe alot is cause by the way societ exploid skinny in the world. Everyone thinks that is what society wants it is all over the tv and media. There is also alot more stresses in the world and many women resort to bulimia and starving themselves and that is a disease that is hard to stop once it starts.

hmmm. i guess it has something to do with media and how it portrays skinny women as desirable, so more and more women want to be skinny. it's good though, that some portions of the fashion industry are seeing the potential dangers of having really skinny models so now they're requiring models to gain more weight and banning those who dont make the weight requirement.
as for me, i prefer being healthy than skinny...

yes i heard about some models being banned. i think that is great since a lot of impressionable young girls look up to these woman. it is about time they did something.

Putting on weight uncontrollably adds to your health problems . This is perhaps the sole reason why people want to reduce weight and prefer to be slim .
