Spioler - if you did not see the these films and don't want to know what happens at the end, don't read further. I saw both films in the theater. I don't care for gore, but I accept it as a part of modern day horror films. I thought Saw was suspenseful and had pretty good action throughout the film. I thought Hostel was super boring in the beginning and into the middle. But I liked Hostel better. When this movie got going, you got suspense scenes, action scenes and suspense/action scenes, whereas in Saw, you had suspense scenes, and you had action scenes, but two in one scenes were rare. Secondly, and more important for me, I loved what they did with the character, Paxson. Writers are taught that characters are supposed to grow and with Paxson, I didn't like him in the beginning, but by the end, I was on the edge of my seat rooting for him. With Saw, I actually started to dislike the characters who were trapped. Third, it was the proper ending - Paxson won - I would have been really disappointed if Paxson lost. Rocky losing made it a better film by having him lose, but in this movie, I think the better move was to have the main character win. Anyway, at the end of the day, my vote goes to Hostel.

Definitely SAW!!! I saw SAW first before Hostel. For Saw, I was so captivated by the movie even during the first part, the dialogue was very smart and the acting was brilliant. As for Hostel, I had high expectations but the beginning part was too boring for me. When it cam to the middle part and I saw all the gore and the brutality, I wanted to stop my dvd player. Saw made me think, Hostel made me grimace..

Both of those movies are indeed unique in terms on the story line; both are also gory and possesses mature contect. Hostel is kind of violent in many ways since it shows torture and physical injure detail by detail. On the other hand, the Saw series shows a psycho that gives you a chance to escape his traps by simply doing what you need to do. The killer will let you suffer because you were not thankful enough of what you have in your life. Saw 1 and 2 are psychological thrillers that effect your mind and your decision making.
Both endings are unpredictable. Hostel by the way has a sequel coming up; it'll be shown on June 8 I presume; One more thing I would like to add is the effect on me after I finished watching the two movies. I got so irritable after watching Hostel and my and my girlfriend ended having a fight towards the end of the movie so to speak harhar! We patched things up afterwards but it's really disturbing to think that this might be the reason why serial killers out there would say that they were influenced by such films. On the contrary, Saw doesn't have an effect us in any way, just another interesting movie that thrilled us for for the day.
