Wow! I cannot believe that such a touchy (parden the choice of words) subject was never responded to. During my elementary school years spanking was accepted. I remember being spanked for reasons that I never thought was necessary. For instance, turning around in my seat to see who was poking me in the back with their pencil, dropping a book to the floor and having it startle the teacher. Really stupid stuff. As a result I was traumatized by the public humiliation of being spanked by the teacher.
Disciplinary measures should be taken but not physical discipline or any type that humiliates a child.

I was never spanked, but had to kneel in the corner, this was in 4th grade. I used to live in Connecticut and I moved down to Tennessee. When I signed my children up at their school there was a section in the handbook on corperal punishment. Boy was I shocked! I signed a paper stating I did NOT want my child spanked. I had thought they had done away with school spankings altogether.

I agree with the previous poster. I also remember being spanked in school (only once) and I remember other students being spanked in school. It seemed to me then and now that is more about using humiliation to change behavior. When my own daughter started school, the school system did not use corporal punishment. We moved to another state and the new school system not only utilized corporal punishment, but when I objected to the practice, the principal told me that she was sorry I had a bad taste in my mouth for her school but that I should let the professionals teach my child and I should stay home and take care of my house. Needless to say, I was not a happy camper! A few days later, I pulled my daughter out of that school and began a homeschool program for the next four years. We moved back to the previous state and school district and she graduated from high school.
Seriously, if I don't hit my child, am I going to allow some stranger to hit her? I don't think so!

WOW! I would have pulled my child out of that horrid school as well. That principal was way out of line in my opinion.

Yes, the principal was way out of line. I'd been teaching my daughter about "life" since she'd been born, why wouldn't I be involved in her education? I believe an education is the best advantage anyone has in this world. I ran a homeschool for my daughter for three years. She was a social butterfly, being involved in tae kwon do, acting, theatre, etc., and by the time she was in 8th grade, she was reading "Slaughterhouse Five" for fun. She was and is an English Professor's dream student. When she went back to public school, she entered high school already having high school credits. She's an amazing young woman and I think I had a little something to do with that.

no. i think it's not their place to lay a hand on any child. that's the parents responsibility. that would be cause for a lawsuit.

i definitely wouldn'tlike that way of punhishment.the kids might be traumatic to go to school because of hitting them.my kids might be mentally hurt and physically as well.they can make them stand in the corner orgive them more assignments but hitting is just too much!

No, "educators" should teach my children, but they have no right to lay a single finger on my son. I would be livid and call the cops. I don't spank so a school shouldn't spank my son. How would that make a learning environment better? What would that teach other children? I think that is just disguisting. When I was in school, I had a teacher who had a ruler and would slap our fingers with it in typing class when we looked down at the typewriter. She had issues lol, I wonder if she still is a teacher.
