I am having many problems with my computer. I can get on to myLot but not most other internet sites. My email is also not working. It is quite annoying. I use Windows 98 and Broadband with Orange. My boyfriend is trying to get me to use Linex but everyone else I know uses Windows. Have you ever had any computer problems? If so what?

I think we've all had computer problems at one time or another. Sadly for me I am tech support for everyone who knows that I have multiple computer certifications, even though I've done by best to distance myself from the computer industry. The reason I'm posting here is that I noticed you are using windows 98. Likely it is time for a new computer, or at the very least a reformat of your computer and reload of the operating system. Windows 98 is notoriously bad for corrupting itself and getting bloated with time. The longer you have used it, the more things that been installed and uninstalled serve to corrupt windows 98. Reformatting and reloading will help to solve alot of your problems, but I would also strongly suggest upgrading to windows XP. Windows 98 is no longer supported and no longer updated. There could be any number of trojans and viruses on your computer that will never be addressed because microsoft is no longer releasing updates for security problems or bug fixes. Best of luck to you.

I strongly agree with your reformatting advice. Actually, people recommend to uninstall everything, then reformat the hard drive once every 2 years, or so. I use Win98 on one of my computers and I did not have trouble with it.

Yeah it's essential to reformat and reload windows 98 once a year or two if you want it to keep working correctly. Now that they've stopped updating it and releasing security fixes I think it's time that everyone migrate to XP.

If you cannot access some web sites despite your broad band internet connection, then very probably your computer itself is not powerful enough to display those web sites in a reasonable time. Most often, the computer will be overwhelmed by the workload that it will just freeze. Here are a few tips to help you solve your problem: - You might consider adding some memory (RAM) to your computer. An amount of 512 MB should be enough for the computer to work smoothly. - It is better to use Firefox than Internet explorer. Firefox is much faster the IE. Also, IE is known to be resource greedy and has some memory leak problems. - Using Linux is a good suggestion too. I really suggest that you make a Live CD of UBUNTO. This way you can use Linux whenever you like it from your CD and without uninstalling Windows. As you boyfriend seems to be already familiar with Linux, he will very probably give more information on how to do this properly and where to download UBUNTO.

ubunto and its variant Kubunto are meant to be used by people who are new to Linux. It is very easy to use and already comes with most of the software that you might need to do your daily tasks. Linux is faster, requires less resources, is more secure and much more stable than Windows. I also find that the interface of Linux (KDE) is much more attractive than that of Win XP (and of course than that of Win 98 :)). Here are some screenshots: http://www.thecodingstudio.com/opensource/linux/screenshots/index.php?linux_distribution=Kubuntu%207.04 This is a very good web site for Linux beginners by Marcel Gagné: http://www.marcelgagne.com/

Yes, I think I was using Firefox rather than Internet Explorer. What is your opinion oF Linux? Is is easy to use once you have downloaded it please? My boyfriend works as a web site developer. He knows lots about computers but he is not very good at explaining it to me.

yes I do have some problems with my computer, like virus attack or missing some of my registry files. But you are using win98 why not try winXP or even Linux, they are very good and far better than win98. Thanks

Yes, it is annoying when your computer freezes. I got my computer in 1999 so it is also quite old. I think it is funny I can still get myLot but no other internet sites.

Talking about computer problems, I can list some of them that I have encountered before. 1. Could not boot up. 2. Switched off by itself. 3. Could not get online. 4. Could not install some applications/games. 5. Could not vie any picture. 6. Could not shut down. There are many more but those are the most troublesome ones. I have not been having any of the above problem with my new laptop so far.

It's very common to have computer problems all the time. Especially nowadays the computer virus is becoming much more serious. I suggest you to use Windows XP. It has a recover function and this is super. When you find something wrong, then you can recover it from some days ago when it was fine.
