My computer has wonked out on me in the last week or so. I've run my cleaners and such and even run it through hijackthis which normally solves all my problems but I've still got this silly bug. Nothing to bad; just annoying.
When I restart my computer properly and bypass the scandisk, my taskbar doesn't seem to work. I mean, the windows that I'm working with don't show up in the taskbar and I have to alt-tab to get from window to window. Yet if I shut it down improperly and the scandisk runs on start-up whatever the glitch is it's gone.
Like I said, not too scarey but it's really beginning to annoy me.
If anyone out there knows what the issue is and can help me fix it, I'd be grateful.

It sounds like you have a persistent virus that is deleting or damaging the files that your taskbar needs. Scandisk is probably repairing those files, but the virus keeps damaging them. You need a good antivirus that can find and remove this problem. I recommend downloading a demo of Kaspersky since that is the highest rated antivirus software. If you have a hard time with it you can get Avast Antivirus for free from www.avast.com. If none of these can fix your problem you can use your Windows XP CD to do a repair install, or just backup your important files and do a full reformat and reinstall of Windows.

Sorry for the delayed reply.
myLot is blocked at work. I have found a way around it, but the post buttons don't work, all I can do is navigate and read threads. Posting data does not work. As a result, by the time this gets online, there may be a better answer already.
At the time of me typing this, it was one hour after you wrote your problem out.
I think solution #2 could very well be correct, but I don't know for a fact that Scandisk picks up THOSE kinds of errors, I could be wrong, but I am a little skeptical, even if it does make a lot of sense given the way you have described your problem.
I am also very surprised that HijackThis! has not caught anything. However, you have to be careful, I once had a virus that HijackThis! kept catching but I never did anything about it. Why? Because it named itself Microsoft Windows Update. With those stupid XP Service Packs coming out, I thought nothing of it. So you have to watch for that.
Another potential situation, if you have recent restore points, maybe restoring your computer to just before those problems started taking place could help.
