rent: must-see movie

Well, I wouldn't really consider it strange that a movie with very few straight parts would necesserally be worse than one with only straight charactars? lol (just teasing) I thought the movie was ok, but I think the stage version was much better. I think the movie lost a lot in removing the sung dialogue (some people think it strange and "un-natural" that charactars start singing in the middle of scenes - I think it's even less natural if they go between singing and speaking all the time - let them sing all the time instead). Also, I think the movie had lots a bit of the "raw-ness" of the stage musical. It was a little less edgy and a little more made into a nice hollywood story.

This movie adaptation of the live broadway musical was fantastically done! I especially loved how the used pretty much all the original broadway cast in the movie, save for Mimi and Joanne. And even though I had my misgivings about Rosario Dawson as Mimi, she did a very good job. I, too, didn't like the fact that they altered some of the singing parts into speaking parts. However, there were other aspects of the movie that made me like the musical even more. For example, the La Boheme part. I thought it was just OK when I watched RENT on stage, but they really enjoyed how it translated in the movie and it easily became one of my favorite parts of the movie. Although nothing can beat watching the cast perform this live, the movie was and is a great alternative for people who cannot get to a theater or whose cities are not part of the RENT tour. Plus, if you buy the dvd, you'll always be able to watch and listen to RENT whenever your heart desires. All in all, I am so happy they made this movie!

I really like the musical Rent and so I naturally wanted to see the movie version. It was great. Most of the original stage cast remained in the movie cast. I think that there are a lot of great songs and accurate details of life and relationships.
