Does all the negativity in the news lately depress you?

It seems to me that lately there is so much negativity in the news that it really is getting me down. Has it affected anyone else like this? I'm especially concerned for our armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. I hurt so much every time I hear some more of them have been killed, that I just want it to end. Things just seem to be getting worse and worse.

My solution to this is to avoid the news. I keep an eye on headlines on my Yahoo page, but as a whole I try to avoid it. The media is so set on only reporting the bad that it just isn't worth it. Plus, the media is so biased that I know that I'm never getting the full story. My advice is that if you are religious, keep the troops in your prayers. If you really feel passionate about it, then look into volunteering with a group that puts together care packages and writes letters. This way, you're doing something positive, and you know that you're supporting them as best you can. Another suggestion is to watch a show like The Daily Show for your news--you actually learn a lot without all the depressing side effects.

Thank you, gaminemadcap, for your comments. Yes, I try to avoid the news as much as possible, but they always manage to sneak in the headlines. If prayers could bring them home, they would have been here long ago. I don't give up hope, though.

personally I find I need to take an occasional break from the news. I dont think its a good idea to live with your head under a rock. But it does start to pile up sometimes and I find it best to take a break from it for a week or two so that it doesnt drag me down to much.

i do that, too. there are days when i skip watching the news. sometimes, all they do is just add something up to spice up the old news. there's nothing new with the news. all they do is stir up things so we'll feel we wanna watch it. but there are days when i don't find it really interesting to watch the news anymore.

yup. even if there are lots of good news around, still, the news team seems to stress so much on negativities. i don't know why good news to them isn't news at all. so, instead of being happy with things going on, when i watch the news and hear lots of bad things about the world, i feel so bad and sad.

I one of those people who just doesn't listen to the news much...oh, yes, I listen to the radio news a bit as I'm having my breakfast, so it's not like I'm in the complete dark about what's going on...but I purposely don't go out of my way to hear the news as it is so depressing and it seems like it is the same basic dismal depressing news over and over again

It has gotten so miserable that I really only read the Sunday newspaper and skip the nightly news. That is a far cry from when I used to read at least one daily paper, watch the regular news, and tune in to CNN. The world has become a very depressing place and I came to the realisation there is very little I can do about it other than pull the blankets over my head. Voting doesn't help. Understanding it makes it worse. Talking about it is frustrating. Joining groups to combat problems is futile...yes it is a sad state of affairs.

No, bad new don't depress me. All those negative events are just symptoms of societies' (un)health, consequences of our attitudes and acts. If anything could depress me, it would be our societies themselves, without naming any in special. But then, what can I do? Ignore the news? The story tells of the ostrich who buried his head into the sand and got overrolled by a truck. Deplore them and cry? Yes, sometimes things are really worth to cry about. That denotes compassion and is a good thing. But this is not sufficient. The only good reaction in reading bad news is to do something that can prevent or at least diminish the reasons of their origin. Can't change things on the great stage? But, at least, you can protest, can yourself make heard. Can't change men's injustice and evil deads? You can change them in your life, within yourself, then go along with those little injustices around you. Your depression is comprensible, but it make things only worse for you!

I try not to watch the news because it makes me depressed. Not only the war but also the violence and crime that is rampant in the USA nowadays.

I find the news very disturbing as wellas depressing. It is so sad to hear about the tragedies that are going on in the world as well as our own little cities we live in. I had to stop watching it. My husband can;t understand why I turn it off. I have expalined that it is one thing to watch a distrubing t.v show knowing it is not real and it is actors, but the news is reality, and real life. I am not in denial, I just find it better for my mental health to abstain from the news. But I do miss out on so many important things this way.
