What is going on in the world?

I usually don't leave the house with my 5 month old son unless my husband is with me for the simple reason of not feeling safe anymore. Today I was so bored, so I decide to take a walk with my son. I went down the block to the dollar store, and that is as far as I got. I looked up to see a helicoptor hovering over my neighborhood. I heard some people walk into the store and say there was a couple robberies in the area and they are trying to find the guy. So of course, I walked home as fast as I could back to my house.
I can't even take my son to get some fresh air for fear of something happening. I don't even live in a bad area. I live right by the bay and ocean (less than a mile away) and I am affraid to walk around out there. There aren't a ton of people that walk around there, so I don't want to be picked out by anyone as a target. Anyone else feel this way?

i am also very wary of going out. we live in a moderately safe area, but in south africa, that means just a few murders or rapes took place in the last year. when i drive to the store, i take off all my jewelry and leave my cellphone at home, because they kill for those. i fear for my daughters life. how will it be when she grows up?

oh my god i am exactly the same, i have a 5 month old daughter and i refuse to go out without my partner and even then i panic if anyone so much as looks at us funny cos i know if anything was to happen he would protect us at whatever cost, the flat above us got raided by police the other morning, very exciting but also very worrying. My mum and my sister came over today and decided to go for a walk round the park, on our way back there was an idiotic young lad on a motorbike with a learners plate riding round the park on the path coming inches away from us and suddenly swerving off he did this until we left the park then we saw him racing another biker on the road.

depends on where you are going in sa. like my area is moderately safe. so is most city suburbs and small towns. but over all you just have to keep your eyes open and travel by day. i guess you should just be careful in a country where baby rapists gets 25 years, or murder 30, or rape 10 to 15 years.
