I grew up during the 50s and 60s, and there were a lot of westerns that came and went during this period. I really miss them. So I did a search just to see how many I could remember, and I was amazed! There were many more than I actually remembered. The site was called fiftiestvweb.com. This led to my concluding that they have it all wrong now when they say that kids watching violence on tv is what is causing them to be violent these days. Back then we couldn't get enough of the "shoot-em-ups." We had fights sometimes, but nothing like the degree of violence that we see today.

I started watching t.v. in the 70's so I missed the western boom.My mom told me once that as soon as Gunsmoke became a hit, the other networks added westerns to their line-up.Do you have a favorite? Do you have Encore Western channel? They play western movies and T.V. shows.

No, sarahruthbeth, I do not have cable tv as I cannot afford it since it's gotten so expensive, but I often receive catalogs with old series on DVD, so I think that I will be ordering some soon. Speaking of Gunsmoke, my grandmother loved that show so much that she would dare us kids to speak a single word while the show was on,lol. Thanks for the memory.

You are really missing a treat then, Dan_ul! There were so many of them that some western or other was on each and every day.

The only western that I watched was Bonanza, but my husband tells me that he watched a lot of the westerns. I agree that there was a great deal of shooting in the westerns, but it was primarily the shootings of villans and of course the indians. The violence on tv today is much more intense and against seemingly anyone! I feel the increase in violence in children is less about TV and more about stability in the home. I think that children don't feel as complete or something. Many things likely contributed to this, women entereing the workforce, kids being pushed earlier and earlier to excel and many otheor things!

i did grow up with those movies flooding the screens, too. the closest rivals were love stories then. i can never the likes of clint eastwood and charles bronson topping the list of hte more popular guys on entertainment. yul brynner and telly savalas has just crept into my mind, too. at the local scene, we had the likes of jun aristorenas and jess lapid in the philippines.

I was and am still a big lover of Gunsmoke; I remember Bonanza; It used to come on on Sunday nights after The Wonderful World of Disney; I also remember The Wild Wild West too. I kind of miss them myself as well since I grew up on them.
