do you always use the word HELLO to answer a call? or do you have any words to get a call?do you ever have any distinct manner on how you are answering your phone calls? i know that in chinese speaking countries, instead of hello, they use the word wei to replace it. but wei is still hello in english :) so what is your style in answering phone calls? the old hello? or any other words for hello?

When somebody calls me on phone,i usually started my word "hello, who's on the line please?" or greeting him/her first like 'good morning, good noon,or good evening' depending on what time..and started our conversations.

Good question. The answer is no, I don't always say, "Hello" to answer a call. But if it's a landline then YES, I always answer "Hello" because I don't know who the person is on the other line. However, I suppose that you mean answering calls on my cellphone where you know we can see who's calling us. So if the caller is identified, I usually say, "What's the news/problem?" Sometimes when a friend calls me at around 6 in the morning I say, "Why are you calling me so early?" A friend who has not called me for ages I would say, "Thanks God, you're alive!" But if the caller is unidentified, yes, I say "hello"

i think it really depends on who is calling. it is prefered to give a more personal greetings if we know who is calling, and i think this gives more life to the conversation. thanks jemina! have a good day :)

If I know the 'caller' through caller ID..then I say 'HAANJI"...it is an Hindi word meaning thereby 'Yes". I avoid saying HELLO!,if possible.. to reply a call.

I always try to look at the caller ID before I answer the phone. If it is someone that I know I will say 'Hows it going, whoever." If I don't know who is calling then I do just say hello or I will say Smith Residence how may I help you. It just depends on my mood as to how I answer the phone as to how I will answer it. I always try to be polite.

I will answer the phone with Hello. When it's someone I know who's calling then I will say Hi - and their name.

If I'm at home when a call comes thru, yes, I usually just answer with a hello. Work is completely different. Then it's typically, "Thank you for calling ___ company, How may I help you?" Of course, if it's someone I know, that will usually be followed with a hello too, lol.

It really does depend who is on the other end of the call. Caller ID is a wonderful thing. If it a friend I will often answer the phone with an accent, being british, scottish, Indian or Chinese and just mess with them a bit. Nothing like answering with thick british brogue saying "El-lo." Now if it is a telemarketer or some other unwanted caller, I will often pretend to be a business and answer the phone with, "Joe's Meat Market, you slab em', I'll stab em'" or something along those lines. One has to have a little fun in life... all work and no play...

You are right. I am a Chinese and most of the time I will speak "wei" when I answer a phone at home. If I am at work or my mobile phone receives a strange call, then I always say "ni hao".
