Have you said "Maybe in another life.."?

Have you and someone you care for been kept apart for some reason, so that you've said to each other, "maybe in another life"?
What are the reasons that have kept you apart? Do you think it makes sense, given that, realistically, we only have one life so that if you care that much, why not take the chance with the life you have?
But for those that did once say "maybe in another life", and moved on with other people, I wonder how many still regret not taking the chance, or maybe realized it was the right thing after all. Maybe you both knew when you were saying it, that it was mainly infatuation, say, and not the real thing.

I once fell in love with a guy who was married. Then, later on when he was not married anymore, he called me up, but I was with someone else, then later, I was not with that guy anymore and I met up with my old friend online. He was married again. By this time I was rolling my eyes, and about the time my friend was lamenting 'maybe next lifetime', I was thinking "Oh what a relief it is." I don't regret that the timing was never right for us at all.

There may be examples of couples separated by circumstances beyond their control (see Atonement). But I agree, in most cases if it doesn't work out this lifetime, there's a good reason for that, and most likely it wouldn't work out in any lifetime.

That's not necessarily true, because in another lifetime my friend might not have been so serious and depressing. He might have been more generous... I used to have to tip servers when we went anywhere because he was so chintzy. And in another lifetime, I might not be so intolerant.

Yes, "Maybe in a life time" is a good way to politely refuse someone. Kind of like "It's not you, it's me". And we do say a lot of things like we're in a movie, don't we? Thanks for your response.
