A dog I once knew and loved

Many years ago when my son Adam was in 9th grade he was inducted in the National Honor Society. Most kids don't get in until they are in 10th or 11 grade so we were very proud of him. That year for Christmas he wanted an Italian Greyhound. They are a miniature greyhound that originated in Italy.being part Italian he wanted one. That was all he wanted for Christmas so off to a breeder he and I went. We found a small grey and white timid mini puppy that was just big enough to fit in the bottom of his backpack which is where she slept all the way home. She cost 900 dollars so we figured that was about 100 dollars a pound!..lol He named her Adirondack Echo and we called her Echo. She slept in Adam's bed under the covers with him everynight and would cry all night if he spent the night away from home so I would have to bring her in my bed. We thought about showing her but my illness was beginning to take it's toll on me and I was doing less and less. That summer Adam and Micah went to basketball camp at Syracuse University for 2 weeks and ofcourse Echo had to come sleep with me.When Adam came back she would hang out in his room but would comeback to my bed at night. I became more ill as time went by and spent more time in bed.Echo would curl up near which ever area of my body that hurt the most. She would literally suck the pain from my body.It was like she knew that I hurt and she wanted to help.As time went by she seldom left my side and would only go to Adam's room if I was away. When I would return she would be so excited she would make a funny little yipping sound and try to rub against me...like she couldn't get enough of me.I was her person and she felt she had to take care of me above all else. I had been having a very hard time and had spent some time at the hospital trying to get my illness under control.I was home overnight but Echo was still very nervous over me..she would run to me and fret over me! I went outside to drink my coffee with one of the kids on the swing. One of their friends came and didn't realize we were on the side lawn and went in the house. My little Echo scooted out the door and ran up to the road looking for me.I didn't even know she was out when I heard the slamming of brakes and my little Echo was badly injured. We called the vet but she was gone before we could get the vet to us or to the vet.We did have time to tell he how much we loved her.One of the last things she did was lick my hand as if to say 'who will take care of you now?' My little friend has been gone 3 years now . When I buried her I poured a bunch of bulbs in on top of her and each year she greets me with smiling daffy faces that her little body feeds. Adirondak Echo was one of the best friends I've ever had and I will never forget her so this is dedicated to my friend Echo. In her name I donate to the IG.If you consider one check this site first to know more about them. http://www.igsafehouse.org/available/ Hugs

Oh Mom - what an amazing little fella Echo was! I do so wish I could have met him but I am not at all surprised that he was drawn to you so strongly! Don't you realise by now that your warm, caring and nurturing personality draws everyone who comes into contact with you in your direction? You make us all want to be better people just by your example! I know you must miss Echo terribly but what a wonderful idea to plant the bulbs where you buried him - maybe when I come visit it will be springtime and I will get to see the beautiful reminder of a special friend! xxx

I know you loved little Echo like she was one of your children. I had a good cry today when I read this. It was so sad and awful when she passed.

What a wonderful story, Raydene. Animals are incredible creatures aren't they? You certainly have suffered your share of pain and loss in your lifetime. I glad, though, that you had such a special friend for a little while.

Dogs are so sweet, and our dog Chico has a beautiful smile and he listens to everything we say. If we say ride, his ears pop up, because he likes to go for a ride in the car. If we say walk his ears pop up and he is very inteligent. We love our little doggie. If you want to make some money from home, join my candle biz, and it offers great fundraisers for any kind of organization. The profit is excellent. I'm sorry that you have had a loss also. It is difficult to loose a little friend. I was always so careful when she was outside. It wouldn't have happened except she was searching for me.I had walked across the road earlier and she could most likely smell me and was looking for me.

What a great story, Echo was a special little doggie. this was a two kleenax story, animal's know when some one is in pain or sad and they comfort you. I am alway's reading story's where animal's do thing's like calling 911 in an emergency like they were trained to do by their owner's. she will alway's have a special place in your heart.

Yes she will.Through the years I've been blessed with many animal friends. Some get closer to me and some to my husband or one of the kids.Echo drew to me more as my pain increased.I swear when she laid close to my legs the pain would lessen alot.My kids think I should get another small dog to sleep with me but I'm not ready to fill Echo's spot yet.I so so love that little dog! What a touching story. You will never forget your echo. He may have been gotten for your son but that little guy knew you needed him more. As I read the end of this story there were tears in my eyes. I have had a dog who was my best friend also. He is no longer around but is always in my heart. Echo will always be there in your heart and each year when your flowers come to bloom your echo will come and visit your heart stronger. I went to the site. Those are precious dogs. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing this with us.
