Should pets be secured in a moving vehicle?

I see so often people driving with their pets, dogs specifically, on their laps. I find that very disturbing that they don't think enough of their pets to secure them as they would their children. Am I wrong in feeling this way?

yes, not only is it unsafe for them (the pets) but it is a HUGE distraction to the driver which can be very unsafe and cause accidents...
do they make any sort of seat belts for pets? car seats for pets? hm...just wondering...
any inventors out there willing to take a shot?
