I know what you are thinking, the old-school up-and-down yo-yos of your Grandparents' era.
Well, that IS old-school.
Yo-yoing has made a huge comeback, thanks entirely to a new breed of metal, ball-bearing axle yo-yos that allow players to perform long and complex string tricks. Hard to picture, so let me put one in your head:

Modern tricks include:
-Whipping slack string around the yo, forming complex patterns.
-Grinding the Yo-yo along ones arms, fingers, etc
-Long, complex layers of string transitions and movements
The yo-yos used in this style run anywhere from $20 plastic yo-yos to $100+, Machined, aircraft-grade aluminum yo-yos polished so smooth they can sit in your palm spinning in place.
There is also a style knows as 2a (Versus the above style, which is known as 1a), which is the more traditional (on paper.. not in practice) style of yoyoing, involving 2 lightweight yo-yos and complex looping patterns, as evidenced here:

Again, the world champion in his respective 'field.'
There are also the 4a, or Offstring (Yo-yo not connected to string), 5a, or Freehand (String connected to a counterweight instead of one's hand), and 3a (2 yo-yos, doing the style of tricks from 1a) styles.
The yo-yoing community has grown quite large, with many forums such as yoyonation.com dedicated to Yoers and their craft. People can post trick videos (Just like a skateboarding trick video), pictures of yo-yo modifications (Drill press recessed yo-yos, yo-yos with molden silicone responses systems, etc), and set up trades or meets.
Every year this all culminates in the World Yo-yo contest, held in Orlando Florida, which attracts thousands of yo-yos from around the world.
All in all its really a great hobby, stress-reliever, stupid-human-trick, whatever you want to call it.
Anyway... anyone Yo-yo here on myLot?

I love yo yos. I first started snout 10 years ago with my first Yomega Xbrain Wing. I then bought a Yomega Xbrain regular.
After learning basic tricks and methods, I hung up the ballbearing automatic sleep and return system for some rather expensive yo yos. One classic wood, one titanium wing style, and one titanium regular. I am not winning any contests exactly, but when I start whipping it up, people are always gathering to see what the hell the crazy guy is doing with that yo yo.
