Okay you might be doing a double take on this question...after all most of us here ARE grown up....but are you really doing what you originally wanted to do...those dreams, those goals, those ambitions...or are you like most people NOT doing what your hearts desire wanted to do?
Do you still deep inside still have that dream of going after that goal you wanted...do you still want to pursue those dreams...
For many years....far too many my life was put on hold...I've had a lot of setbacks and detours...what I've gone through in life would dampen a lot of spirits...but I guess the one thing I've always had has been hope...that yes, I CAN STILL DO THAT no matter the age.
I have many ambitions I want to fulfill in life, and I do plan to achieve them...maybe it's the overachiever aspect in me...I want for instance for my photography work to be recognized...I want all my short stories published....I guess in short, like most creative persons to have my artistic endeavors acknowledged
So maybe in a way...I haven't "grown up" yet....LOL
So have you completely grown up? Are you doing what deep inside your heart that you want to do in life?
And hey, don't say you're too old to go after what you want to do in life...if that were the case I would have given up at age twenty--LOL
So what do you want to be when you grow up..what is that dream you still want to achieve??

When I was about 10 I wanted to be a ballerina. That was never gonna happen because I would've had to start dancing when I was about 3 for it to become a reality. I wanted to be an actress and had a brilliant opportunity but my Dad forbade me. I decided I wanted to be a nurse and once again my Dad stepped in and said no. At about the same time as I was ready to go nursing I fell pregnant and that seemed to be the end of all my dreams and hopes. I ended up in a violent marriage and subsequently became a single parent and cut off from my family.
I still haven't recovered.

I can relate here...with me it was my mom who put her foot down on a lot of my goals...As I mentioned in my response to Rosie..I did study a bit of ballet..I would have loved to be a ballerina too--I did study acting and was a Drama major in college to the disappointment of my family who wanted me to be a female Einstien instead or at least have taken something "practical" in college
As for you're being cut off from your family...I hope you'll consider a lot of us here as family now as you're always welcomed here!!

well, i am 28 now, a little grown up and i say, i am happily half of what i wanted to be when i grow up.
i used to dream of becoming a doctor one day eversince i was a little child. but due to some financial reasons, i was not able to push through being a doctor. instead i have become a license pharmacist, a profession which i have learned to love and be proud of. there are things in life which aren't meant to be for us. and i am just happy that somehow, i can still touch the lives of others by being a pharmacist.
but i still dream of becoming a pediatrician one day. i still have that dream in my heart. maybe, who knows... one day, i'll be.
have a wonderful day.

Hi. Well when I was younger I wanted to be a top tennis player and win Wimbledon! So logically at my age there is no way I can fulfill my dream. How many top tennis stars do you know aged over 40? SO that dream has been well and truly dashed:-(( However, my other dream was always to open a home for stray, ill-treated cats, and I can definately still do that! Some would say I've already started, as I have a house full of waifs and strays.......... and hopefully, one day, I will be able to open a proper home staffed by well-trained, animal loving people who will help me give the animals the love they deserve. That is still my grown up dream anyway!
Nice topic - thanks.

Hehehe--you as a tennis player and me as a ballerina...I did study a bit of ballet, but yes, 51 would be a bit old to start again...LOL...
That would be a marvelous idea to open up some kind of rescue place...and with the love and devotion I know you would give them, if your care and concern over Lily is any indicator..the rescues would be in great hands...go for it!!

When i was in 6th or 7th grade i wanted to do reserach in genetics. And so i studied so hard that by the time i reached my 10th grade, i was very good at Medlinian genitics, the DNA concepts, the allels etc... But then after 10th grade i had a choice. Either to pursue my dream, which takes a longer time and also money or take some other course so as to get employment quickly so that i can support my family.
I choose to support my family and totally burried the dreams.
When i was doing graduation i decided to start up a business, so i worked relentlessly on that and came out with some business models. By the end of my graduation, our family economy is so bad that i sold my business plan to Citi financials and raised some quick money.
Now i'm just another software engineer among lakhs. I feel i'm cheating myself by working as s.w engg which i dont like atall. But i need a job that pays me well.

Well you still seem to be young yet...maybe there's some way to go after your goal in a smaller capacity, by doing something related to your original plans

What I wanted to be when I grew up was a registered nurse. I volunteered as a candy striper all through high school and then after high school went to college and my first year took pre-med in my preparation to be a nurse. After I came home for a semster from college and I met a guy, we married, had babies right away and well the nursing thing became a thing of the past, I took a different avenue and went in the legal direction. Although many times in my 20's and 30's I thought about going back to school to finish my dream, but never did. Now that I spent the 20 years doing my thing in Legal and no longer have such a career I don't miss the fact that I did not follow my dream. I loved my legal job and found it very fulfilling and if my dream took another direction, so be it, it was exciting, challenging and everything I wanted in a job, it did me well financially and edcuationally and made me the person I am today. I feel very blessed to have been given the opportunity to have had the jobs I have had.

At an early age I wanted to be a journalist. I've gotten some recognition over the years for my writing, and I thought I could take that to the next level. Now, I don't feel as though I've grown up. I'm focusing on one dream at a time. Right now it is getting a degree. I'm considered on the senior level and I really want to complete it. Somewhere down the line I hope to be what I dreamt to be since a child: a loving wife and mother. Some say that isn't dreaming high enough, but to me, it can't get better than that.

Well, I still have the dream I had when I was little. I will never give up on that dream because it is my first love, which is music. I want to become a music composer. And I know that one day it will happen. I have hope and I will make it happen. I am like the little engine that could! "I think I can, I think I can!

Hi pyewacket, I had many dreams in life like I wanted to become a Police Officer and subsequently Engineer. I could neither become a Police Officer or Engineer. Ultimately after graduating in commerce I become a Accounts Officer, siting at the same table whole day, doing calculations. I think only a few people, with God blessing, can convert their dream into reality. They are blessed soul. I always respect people who convert their dream into reality. Thanks for posting this discussion.

Well, I wanted to be a doctor , a vet or a teacher. Hmmm somehow I didn't become any of those 3. :( But, I wouldn't trade what I do now for nothing. I have my own business with my own hours and do what I want. Well I do what the customer wants. LOL I make homemade candles/soap and it's a very rewarding business for me. But. When I really grow up.. I want to be a MOM. Something I always wanted to be yet God has gifted me yet with a child.

This is kinda a funny one. When I was an early teen I wanted to be an English Teacher-- and I still love the language.
However, the job I have, heck the industry I am in didn't even exist then! I work as an Analyst in an IT Department--- I look back at that dream as a nice idea, but I am having way much more fun doing this, and probably getting a few bucks more as well.
And I still do teach, just on a different level, and different subjects!

What i want to be when i grow up is to be a civil cop. I really enjoy keeping the city clean from the people that dirty the streets. I am not all grown up yet only 16 for now. I might change my mind and pick a diffrent job. Also if i was a civil cop i would be one at TURKEY in Istanbul.

When I was a lot younger I had so many dreams and ambitions, and although a lot of my dreams faded and ambitions went unfulfilled, I still have the odd one of two.
I wanted to be an artist or a writer - I still enjoy painting, drawing and writing
I wanted to be a teacher - I have worked in my son's school as a volunteer
I wanted to work in the travel industry - I did work a stint as a holiday rep in Majorca many years ago
I wanted to scuba dive in a cage to see a Great White Shark - *shrug* well this one is highly unlikely :-)

There are a couple of things I'm balancing on my mind right now. I either want to write or act. Right now I'm working on my first short story, I wanna see hwo that goes. And I have a lot of fun acting, and I think I would really like acting in front of the camera (even though I'm extremly shy). So right now I'm not 100% which way I'm going to go.

I acted on stage for my theater class. I did two mini plays in front of an audience and two class plays in front of an audience. I would be flipping out before actually going on stage, but once I was out there I did pretty dang good! =P lol

Well acting in front of a camera wouldn't be too bad....I did study acting...and performed on stage!! If you want to know nerve wracking try that...LOL...I'd be a wreck before a performance...but once I was on stage, and the spotlight was on..so was I...I loved it

This is a very good q, but also a question that I have been stressing over for about a yr now. It also depresses me when I think about it. I had my life all planned out, what I wanted to be, what I wanted to do, how I wanted my life to be. The only goal I have acheieved was being the best mother I can be to my 2 beautiful boys! NOw.I just dont have the time or the money to finish any of my goals. I am young yes, 22, but I just dont see myself doing any of the things I really want to do. Im just sooo caught up in it that it makes me soooo upset and sad to think about it.

Don't feel bad...I had my life all mapped out for me, had envisioned myself doing certain things then I had all these setbacks...but I haven't given up hope yet---And you are still young as you said...so if I'm still trying to go after things in my life at the age of 51, you can certainly too.

Well it's never too late to start...to become a musician is ageless..you can begin anytime..so why not give it a shot?? Many artists and writers didn't embark on their endeavors until after 50--
