I done barrel racing many years ago. Its probably all changed since I did it last. The rules and that..lol. I thought that it was very exciting, exhilirating and the adrenalin gets pumping. Its very competitive but then I suppose everything is.

Barrel racing is both great fun and hard work. I've trained many barrel horses and riders. It is an athletic event, so both you and your horse have to be in good shape if you want to avoid injuries. This means lots of conditioning work away from the barrels and using your horse in other ways so he doesn't get soured.
There is an exhileration not only in running the barrels but in the partnership you form with these terrific horses. They must love to run, be agile and full of energy with lots of saavy and smarts if you are going to win. There is nothing that can match the power off the starting line, the sudden drop of their shoulder and rump as they round the barrel and the freedom of that last run for home.

I personally do not do it, but I certainly have watched it enough at the rodeos. The gals seem to really enjoy themselves. Give it a shot if you have an interest in it.

I have done the barrels in years but my daughter loves the gaming.
Three years ago she was riding a friends horse in barrels. My friend was adjusting the cinch and walked away to get something and my daughter didn't realize she wasn't finished. They called her number and she rode in.She made it around the first and second barrels and headed around the last when the saddle slide around and under the horse. The horse stopped she jumped off straightened the saddle and finishes the race...She still came in 5th... We still laugh about that one...She could have been injured but luckily she was ok.

I have only watched, and it looks like fun. They all seem to have a lot of fun. Gotta be in sink with the horse to do good.

I did it a while back when I was in high school. My mare that I raced on was injured badly a few years ago and I had to retire her after her surgey. She now lives the life of a retired yard ornament.
I don't barrel race anymore, but I do a little bit of show/place competitions and a few speed/time trials.

Barrel racing is so much fun.. you just have no idea until you get out there and your seconds away from what could be your best or worst run ever. But believe me, whether you come out on top or in last place, you still cant beat the way you feel when it's just you and your horse racing for the prize. I barrel race my fiance's horse and between the two of us we brought home 5 bags of horse food. Some shows give out money but the ones we run at give food. But like I said before, It is a great adrenaline rush... So if you want to... give it a shot. Oh, and most local shows have an easy rider class for people who are just getting started or are just there to practice. But anyway... goodluck if you decide to try it. Just remember.. butt in the saddle, knees in, and hold on..
