Do you wash your hair before the hairdresser does??

Do you wash your hair before going to the hairdresser / beauty salon to get it cut?? I do... and my family thinks I'm NUTS. I don't know why but I can't walk into the salon looking like I just fell out of bed. I mean, if I'm going for a cut, my hair can't possibly look good at that point LOL But I don't go in with it unwashed or with any kind of product still in it (even though it gets washed again the moment I get there!). I just want it to be clean. I often wonder if it's because the hairdressers all look so nice and put together and I don't want to appear sloppy. It's kind of intimidating, in a way. Then, I see other people walk in with bed head and stuff... and I wonder what my problem is LOL So, how about you? Do you pre-wash too? ;)

Oh this is funny. You remind me of my late aunt. I adored her when I was a child and couldn't wait to visit her apartment and go shopping with her. Once when I was there, we had to clean the place before we could go shopping. When I asked her why we were cleaning so hard, she said that the cleaning lady was coming that afternoon and she didn't want her cleaning lady to think she was dirty. LOL

Yep. You've got to keep the place nice and tidy for the cleaning ladies and the burglars. Actually, I'm like my mom and a little on the sloppy side. I hope not too much but I wouldn't wash my hair right before I went to the hairdresser. LOL

LOL!!!!!! Fabulous! This reminds me SO much of my mother, irisheyes! I guess I really did get my quirks from her :) My dad used to say she couldn't have a cleaning lady for that same reason -- she'd have done all the cleaning herself and he'd have paid for nothing lol Also, we couldn't go out for a special occasion or leave on vacation unless the house was perfectly tidy before we left. She said she didn't want anyone to see the house while we were gone and think we were messy -- and I always thought, short of firemen (heaven forbid!) WHO on earth was going to be in the house if we WEREN'T??? Robbers maybe?! LOL I'm sure they would have been impressed that there were no dust bunnies under the tv they were stealing ;)

I used to go to a snobby salon when I was younger, so I would always look my best to go there. Then as I got older and wiser, I thought...why should I go to a salon that intimidates me, costs way too much money, and has stylists don't remember your name and don't really listen to what you want done? So I now go to a smaller salon that I feel comfortable at and doesn't rob me. I always wash my hair prior to going too. It's 10 minutes away so I ponytail it wet and tell her not to rewash it. Saves her time and saves me money.

I know exactly what you mean about feeling intimidated. One salon I went to, years ago, as soon as you walked in the door, every stylist in the place stopped what they were doing and turned to look at you. I always felt horrible. I'd say hello and proceed to either hang up my coat or speak to the receptionist. I just felt like I was being critiqued and didn't like it. I always got a nice haircut but it wasn't worth how I felt going there. Where I go now, it's a neighborhood place, where you can drop in without an appointment and they'll fit you in as soon as they can. There are only a handful of stylists there and, sure they'll say hello, but they don't stop what they're doing to look at you. I feel a lot better there -- and yet I still wash my hair before walking in LOL Go figure! Thanks for your response! :)

I am like you when it comes to hair. I wash my hair before I go but usually i am in a hurry when I am going that I wash it so it saves them a step and all they have to do is cut and send me on my merry lil way. But even if i am taking my time I feel the need to wash my hair before going. Guess means we are extra clean people? or are we strange?

LOL I sure hope we aren't strange... but then, judging by the contributions to this discussions, it seems that there's enough of us, either way! *grin* I'll just say "yes, we're being extra clean" ;) Here's another funny part... I wash and dry my hair to GO to the salon but, after she cuts my hair, I come home with it WET! ROFL I just prefer to dry and style it myself and my hairdresser hates charging the extra cost for blowdrying.

Hi, yes, I can identify with this because that's what I do too. :) I always feel that it is very important to ensure that I show up at the hair dresser's with clean hair. I think that's basic courtesy and showing respect for them too. Afterall, we don't show up sloppy in front of our friends so I don't think we should show up sloppy in front of others as well.

You know, velvetprinzess, I don't personally know anyone who is a hairdresser but I wonder what they expect... do they think people will come in with their hair unwashed, because they will pay for it to be cleaned, or do they feel we'll arrive in our "normal" state of "cleanliness"? I think it's courteous too but it would be interesting to hear from someone in that business, don't you think? Maybe someone here at myLot will enlighten us! ;)

No I don't pre-wash my hair, but I don't like to look bed-head when I go into the salon. So I usually tie my hair up in a pony tail. I don't pre-wash my hair before because my hair is very dry and it won't be good to wash it three times (the stylist would do it two times) in one single day. Therefore, I would let them do the work. When I have my pony tail up, I still look pretty much alive and tidy, and I won't feel like I am an alien in their store. *laughs*

LOL!! That's a very good point, wondericequeen! When my hair was very long, I could do that too... ponytails can really save the day, can't they? Like if you wake up late for work or school? No worries... get that ponytail up high and it looks cute! *grin* Now, though, my hair is longer on the back of my neck but very layered everywhere else so I can't really put it up. I guess that makes it more obvious that I have bed head or something else "alien" going on LOL I like that word... thanks! ;)

*laughs* That's why I have my hair long I guess. Pony tails are actually my friend when in the summer time and I get too hot. *laughs* I'll bet your stylist did a good job on your hair layering it everywhere, it should look really cool. OK, now I understand why you prefer to wash your "bed head" before going into a salon. If I had your hair, I think I would do the same!

LOL, I thought that I was the only one. I always shampoo before going in. I too, have seen women walk in with their hair in a state of dis-array and often wonder why I can't just be like them.

You're not alone LOL I did it again today!! Walked in there for cut and color after doing my hair. Yeesh! I think part of the issue, too, is that I put myself in the hairdresser's place and I don't think I'd enjoy handling hair that wasn't clean or was full of hairspray, mousse or other products before we ever got started. I don't want to think she's standing there thinking, "Oh gross! Doesn't this woman OWN shampoo???" LOL Thanks for empathizing ;)

I am sure that if I had a house keeper I would clean the house in a mad fury before she came to do her job that she gets paid for. lol. what is with us?

Whenever I get my hair cut I usually wash it before too. It is just easier to wash before hand. Not all hairdressers wash your hair first and most times you pay more for them to wash it there.

My mom's hairdresser was like that... he'd charge her more if she didn't wash her hair before getting there. Since her hair was short, he just spritzed it with water to be able to cut it.

Yup, I too, am a prewasher! I can't stand to walk in with my hair being all flat and unstyled! I have short hair and it is also very fine. If I don't blow it dry with some volumizing mousse, I look horrid! My daughter makes fun of me for washing my hair before going for a cut. Oh well, to each their own!

Another kindred soul! LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one getting made fun of by the family ;) My daughters think I'm ridiculous because I brush my hair before my husband and I go out for an evening walk! My take on that is that I never know who I might run into -- even if it's the neighbors or something. Don't wanna frighten anyone LOL

LOL I would never go to the beauty shop without washing my first. That is just gross. LOL I thought everyone did. You mean they dont? LOL Someone might see me and think I was dirty if I did that. LOL

Apparently, they don't LOL Although, I've known some older ladies, too, who make a weekly appointment for their hair and they do absolutely nothing to it otherwise (except maybe poking it with a comb or pick and adding hairspray). They've told me they "don't know how" to do their own hair. How does that happen after all those years??? I couldn't leave my hair undone for a week at a time.

I do not wash my hair at the salon. Neither do I pre-wash my hair before visiting the salon. I wash only after I have cut my hair. It has been my habit because the hairdresser shares comb and scissors. I prefer to have my hair clean after the cut.

Not to mention washing away all the annoying little bits of hair that seem to cling everywhere after a haircut! Itchy!!! LOL

Oh yes, I also wash my hair before going to the hairdresser for a cut. My hair is still wet and comb when I go, so the hairdresser doesn't need to wet or shampoo my hair as I tell them that I had already shampoo and washed my hair. So the hairdresser could easily proceed to cut my hair and save time.

I'm willing to bet there are hairdressers and salons that really do appreciate a person that shows up ready for their cut. So many people are disrespectful of others' time these days, showing up late or not showing up at all, that I'm sure it's nice for them to have someone like you walk through their door!! :)

I do that too! lol. I wash my hair before I go to the hairdresser. I don't want them to think I don't take care of my hair, so I want it to be nice and clean. I DO NOT think you are nuts!!!!!!!! You go! lol

I pre-wash it only because I have dandruff and I usually get my hair blow dried straight, so I don't wash it for a few days. So I have to wash my hair with dandruff shampoo before I go :)

One of my daughters gets horrific dandruff ... to the point that she's now using a tar shampoo, which is finally working better for her than any of the other dandruff products did. She tries to wash her hair before going (although she doesn't always do it), simply because she really hates if anyone can see her dandruff.

I only have to wash my hair once a week. If I wash my ethic hair everyday it will cause my hair to be very dry and break off. I wash my hair once a week and my hair will look good for 2 weeks. When I go to the salon I comb it before leaving. They wash my hair in the salon.

I usually schedule my hair appointments early in the morning so no, I don't wash me hair beforehand. I figure if I look as crappy as possible when I go in then I'll have to LOVE how I look when my hair is done! LOL
