Here in Texas - the students have to take the TAKS test and have to pass all sections of the test in order to graduate from high school and receive their diploma - it doesn't matter how hard they worked for all 4 years - or how many credits they have earned. They could be the top student in the class and yet if they failed any part of the TAKS test then they can't graduate!!! This has caused some really serious debates among parents, students and school officials. Some studies also show that teachers who are giving these tests to the students couldn't even pass the test themselves. I personally think that Texas should get rid of these kinds of tests - they haven't shown to be a benefit to the students - but more of a way of showing them that if they can't pass this test then they can't graduate!!! How would you feel if your child was told they couldn't graduate with their class because they missed a few problems on a test?? Here's a news article on this subject: http://cbs11tv.com/education/local_story_138172618.html

I think its pretty fair. if you are the top in your school you should easily be able to pass the standardized tests. Those tests are extremely general and are basic knowledge questions. I never studied for them, never worried about them, and didn't even try all that hard on them and would regularly get in the 95th percentiles, as would most of my friends. My high school had something like a 97% pass rate for those tests and we all kind of considered them a joke.

Well I guess maybe stating standardized could be a wrong impression of this test. According to recent students who have taken this test - they are definitely not general or basic knowledge questions - they are very difficult even for teachers to answer them correctly. I am curious - were you a student from TX in High School??

No. I attended high school in Virginia, but just about every state has a similar test called a different name.

Wow how cool is that - I was raised in VA and miss it so much!!! I guess you are right that all states have different types of tests that students have to take - I just didn't realize that they were as strict with graduation rules in other states as they are here. Hope you have a Great Day!!!
