I am an electronic music producer and have been making music since 1990. Around 1995 there was possibility to surf on the net but not able to buy music. At 1998 mp3.com started the service where independent artists could sell their mp3 tracks. Also it was possible to get money from listening streams. This was abused by some artists and this service was shut down. Any experiences from mp3.com between 1998-2003. That was the original mp3.com You can also read my experiences at: http://digitalbeatmusic.blogspot.com/ My favorite spot is perhaps last.fm where I can listen new tracks or even demos from new and current artists. I also run a independent internet label called Digital Beat Music. You can check out artists on my label by visiting: http://www.last.fm/label/Digital+Beat+Music/ The plays are now almost at 3500 and counting. I have collected a big list of different Digital Music and mp3 music stores into one page. I recommend you to visit and compare their prices. http://www.digitalbeatmusic.org/digitalbeat_music.html This post may contain blatant self promotion but I have to admit I can pay some of my bills with the money I got from Digital Music Distribution. iTunes pays perhaps the best but artists must sign up via www.cdbaby.com . www.cdbaby.com is a good site if you want to buy music as cds and want to find some other kind of music than mainstream. It´s also a good resource for searching independent music and new artists you are not able to hear on radio or see on Music Television.
