What are you on about? muhammed ali wasnt a pop culture figure, put the boxing part aside and forget the sport he was an ambassador, no other american in history has ever achieved the level of respect and admiration he recieved from the world during the sixtes and seventies, he's the closest thing america had to Gandi would you call Gandi a pop icon?

In my eyes... the greatest thing about America is its Space Program. Going to the moon was a very exciting time. And so was the early Space Shuttle missions.
America did lead the way in making satellite communication possible because of its space program.
As for naming a person... I think Bill Gates would have to be way up there... as he has played a huge role in changing our lives in more ways than one.
The government keep track of us with computers... our workplace cannot operate without computers... and when we come home... we have our own personal computer to do whatever we feel like doing.
I think Hollywood is also a very important part of America. If it was not for American movies... I would have next to nothing to watch on my DVD player.
The American Black music of the fifties inspired Elvis Presley and many English groups in the sixties... and changed our taste in music around the world. Many of us are still listening to that music today... some 40 years later.

Hmmm interesting question. Ali was certainly a great boxer, but sports are just not that significant in the long term. I think Woodrow Wilson for his futuristic vision that exists today would be a better choice. FDR for his incredible strength in the years prior to Pearl Harbor that helped defeat Hitler. Benjamin Franklin is certainly worth a mention for his numrous ground-breaking contributions. Fulton, Morse, Bell, the Wright Brothers, and Edison had enormous effects on the globe. Any of thes men touched the world in a way that will last long beyond Ali, as great a boxer as he was. Entertainment and sports do not tend to have much effect in the long term.

I see your point but its different than mine your eqsamples are all part of a machine, muhammed ali transended that machine, his direct impact on people world wide during the sixties and seventies was phenomonal and it was all done with his own blood and tears.
as for the wright brothers what they did, was going to be done by sombody sooner or later, we might as well say neil armstrong was greater than ali, bell didnt even invent the phone and benjamin franklin wasn't the only good president and, come on, someone like woodrow wilson dreams up ideas and writes them, muhammad ali lived them.
