As a newbie I would pick a camera that does alot of the stuff for you. It should be at least 6 megapixels. It really does depend on what you want to shoot. I would suggest going to a store that sells them and ask alot of questions. They will show you what to look for and what to stay away from, then you can go back to the net to find it. That way to you can take a note of pricing so you know what is too much and what is a great deal.

I like the Canon Powershot series for a greatbegining camera. It has full Auto with many manual settings you can grow into as you get comfortable with them. I ave a 5mp Canon Powershot A530. It is a great camera that will let you work in all types of situtations.
I including a smaple photos taken umder difficult conditions. It was taken at night using the night mode. Night mode is the flash goes off but the shutter stays open after the flash to pick up the background.
