Now, I love giving and receiving compliments, with a simple "thanks, that is so nice of you to notice." Before, I would be so flustered and try to say that it's nothing, or I've had this for a long time it's so old--blah-blah. But through reading a lot of self-development books I realized that a low self esteem does that to you--you do not have enough self worth to graciously accept that you do deserve to be complimented. It took a while, but through constant practice I am getting better at it! Lovely discussion, by the way! :-0

I try to say thank you, I sometimes feel embarrassed, people have told me I am not good at accepting a compliment, I will usually say no its because...or something, but I try to remind myself to just say thank you and smile. Usually I will compliment them back too.

I think this would depend on whether you deserve the compliment or not.
If yes, then be gracious and say thanks. ;-)
If not, try to direct the credit to the right person(s). Doing this will leave a good impression. ^^

I always say thank you. When people gives compliment it means they realy appreciate what you are wearing or doing or why not thank them, at least that is how i feel when i give compliments.
Even if the the comment may have double meaning (like it can be a posible or negative thing) i say "I'll take that as a compliment, thank you." This is maybe because i feel irritated when i give someone a compliment and she'll reply something like "oh this? it's nothing" i feel like being slapped in the face. You know? the feeling that you like the shoes she is wearing and compliment them, then she'll say they are not even her type of shoes or they come in cheap price or all sorts of things, it is just like telling me that im taste is cheap.
I dont fish for compliments, i just love to know that people like whatever it is they are seeing in me so i thank them.

Most of the time compliments embarrass me but I guess it depends on the situation.

I always get embarrassed but I do try to give the person a compliment back also. I really don't think I get many compliments that's why they embarrass me.

It actually depends on the compliment. Let's say I did something that I am proud to do then I'll probably say "Thank you." But if it is something that I got lucky to do or if I feel a bit embarrassed about the compliment the most probable answer will be "I got lucky, it's nothing."

Really? Then I guess I have to practice saying "Thank you" instead of saying "It's nothing." Thank you very much.

That is true, saying "its nothing" irritates me when i give a compliment.

I'm not good in this department at all. I honestly believe that it's a lot to do with self esteem and unfortunately I lack in that department also. I don't know if you agree? I think it's great if you can accept a compliment by saying Thank You. In my travels I have noticed that the people who can accept a compliment out loud are the people who do have a great self esteem feeling very secure. This is just my observation, and who knows maybe I'll get better.

I believe you are correct. Self esteem does play a big role in accepting compliments. If you feel good about yourself you will acknowledge the compliment more easily than if you feel bad about yourself. Thank you for replying with such honesty. And yes you will get better at accepting compliments in the future. As we get older we realize we have many good qualities which are obvious to others.

I still have to remind myself it's okay to just say "Thank you." Sometimes I do find myself embarrassed by compliments. Often, "Oh it's nothing" or "It's not a big deal" just sort of pop right out, don't they? I wonder what it is that makes some people feel uncomfortable when they are complimented.
