why is the color of the sky blue?

i read it, but yesterday my little cousin asked me this, i couldnt answer, reason i forgot...
can anyone remind it my asnwering this.

sure sir..i will take gr8 pleasure in answering this 1 for u.
the sky appears blue coz air scatters short wavelength light in preference to longer wavelengths.when we look towards any part of the sky not near the sun,the blue color we c is blue light waves scattered down towards us from the white sunlight passing through the air overhead..
