From what I have read on here, best response somehow helps with your rating. As far as rating a discussion it helps the person you rate, so inturn if you rate someone they will hopefully rate you back. I haven't read anywhere yet that it actually helps your own rating by rating the discussions. It also helps somehow, when you type in tags to be set when that screen comes up. This is all still fairly new to me, but I hope this helps.

I love learning more about how the site works. Maybe it is an organizational thing? Just really understanding how all of the complications are worked around to come up with a working system!

I believe getting a 'best response' will earn you a little more than just a normal response. The same applies to a positive (+) rating which any member can give to another member if they think that response merits the rating.
I would expect that there is some sort of 'check and balance' system in place to see that the rating is done fairly and not only given to those who are listed in your friends but cannot be 100% sure of course. It would just make sense to have something like that I would think, i.e. that the response merits the rating it is given.
In the meantime, make quality responses and you might get either or both of the above. :)

Yes. I've rated your discussion as negative, coz you have not given a discussion to rate.

I respectfully disagree. I think posing questions that one might not have an answer to generates discussion. This question in specific does not have a black or white answer, so it's very discussion-worthy. Proof is in all the discussion that's been going on!
