I cannot really say the most powerful antivirus but maybe we can say that it is the best antivirus software because it does its jobs pretty well. Through evaluation and assessment, we can be able to determine if the antivirus you are using is very effective. For paid version, you could try Kaspersky or Symantec. Both the two does its jobs quite well and detect and scan your machine thoroughly. While for free version, you could try AVG, AVAST, and AVIRA. At this point of time, I am using Avira AntiVir Personal Classic Edition. I have been using this one for over a long period of time and has never had problems at all. It updates regularly and you can schedule this at your most convenient time. It does not use a lot of memory, hence does not slow down your computer. It detects and delete rootkits, viruses, trojans, worms, etc. It is very effective indeed.
Hope this would help.
Have a great day!

I have used many-a-antivirus. I'm currently using NOD32. LOVING IT. It was voted best AV of 2007. It uses little to no system resources, and is still efficient at detecting threats real-time. I have it on all 4 of my machines [yes... 4 lol] and I haven't gotten any viruses since it was installed ^.^

NOD32 AVG
im using nod32 and for me it's the best anti virus software out there. it uses less resources, won't affect the speed of my computer when it scan on the background, very fast in scanning and detection rate if superb. One time, i tried to scan a computer with both AVg and nod32, there were a total six (6) viruses that were not detected by AVG while nod32 detected them all.
