Slugs in garden lettuce

I have a problem with slugs eating the lettuce in my garden. I've sprinkled insect dust on them that is supposed to kill them, but ten minutes later I watch five more slugs come to the lettuce for lunch. The only thing that I have found to work is table salt. It kills them. But I can't be standing out there all day waiting for them with salt in hand. Any suggestions?
