AVG Free is a popular favorite. It's light on resources, has all the basic features, and doesn't require license renewal: http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ Avast requires annual re-registration, but it does slightly better than AVG in overall detection, and also offers a pre-boot scanner: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html AOL ActiveVirusShield is a free, cut-down version of Kaspersky, a class-leading antivirus product with hourly updates. This one works differently than most others. Rather than monitoring system memory, this one stresses an initial full scan, then continually scans new files as they are written to the hard drive. It's actually quite light on system resources! However, although it will recognize a fresh infection within seconds, it does not monitor HTML or memory, making it predominantly a reactive scanner. You should have a firewall with IPS (Intrusion Prevention Systems), if you intend to use it: http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp? (Note: I suggest using an e-mail account other than your primary account to activate, as AOL's AVS EULA [End User License Agreement] reserves them the right to spam you.) http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Home-Home-Office/Sunbelt-Personal-Firewall/Download/ (Note: Sunbelt Personal Firewall gives you the option to try out the full features for 30 days, after which it runs in "restricted" mode. However, the protection afforded even in restricted mode is enough to protect against most drive-by threats.) AntiVir is not only best amongst the freebies in heuristic detection of new threats, but it's actually better than almost all commercial ones as well, bested only by WebWasher (according to virustotal.com). If you handle your e-mail online, this could be a solid first choice. If you don't, and use a desktop client like Outlook or Thunderbird, you should go with something else: http://www.free-av.com/ CyberDefender is antivirus and antispyware combined. It's light on resources, and leverages its 12 million+ user network to track down and identify new threats quickly: http://www.cyberdefender.com/products.html (Note: CyberDefender does not have its own firewall. If you need one, you might consider Sunbelt Personal Firewall.) Separate from Kaspersky-powered ActiveVirusShield, AOL also offers a free, all-in-one suite called Safety and Security Center. It includes antivirus and IPS firewall powered by McAfee, and antispyware by CA PestPatrol. It requires minimal user intervention, and is fully automated. The scanners include automatic updating, scheduled scanning, and real-time memory monitoring, as well as POP3 scanning for desktop e-mail clients. The firewall (McAfee Personal Firewall Express) is the key player in this suite. It's tough enough against drive-by exploits that an average user wouldn't need anything else: http://daol.aol.com/safetycenter

No. I would use ZoneAlarm for a free firewall that is good. I am on broadband now and use a modem/router that has a built in hardware firewall which is better than a software firewall.

If you are ready to pay, Norton and Mcafee are best. If you are not ready to pay, no problem........ There are many Anti-Virus available for free. The best Anti-Virus available for free is AVG Anti-Virus. Here is a link: free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5 This is my first discussion on mylot, How was it? Please rate me
