Actually one of the greatest problems from the other side of the project perspective is that many Software Engineers do not understand that they are writing code for other people to use. And that the needs of the end user need to be met for the code to be sold successfully.
My fiance' works for a software company in a nitch market. They have two developers. The company ended up in real trouble for a couple of reasons but here is one.
The Engineers were deciding and prioritizing what changes to make in the product. They went for what was cool, or what sounded like fun to code, not what their Technical Support team was getting calls for.
So, this company then decided to put together a team of business analysts to help the engineers remember, that the End Users pay the bills. The developers quit in a huff. They had to get new ones in. This time their worked with a company that did some outsourcing sending some of it to engineers in your country to complete. Again, some of the same situation existed--- a lack of listening to what needs to be done and a lot of code written that just doesn't meet the business need of the application..
If you want to just code things that are fun, and that you want to do, form your own company and release software to yourself. This is work, and some of it is interesting and some of it isn't. You may get Engineer in your title, but remember you are in a service industry servicing others needs.
