I am only 35 years old and suffer from really high blood pressure . I take four pressure pills a day plus the aspirin to lower it and have the Nitro in case I am having a heart attack . I was told that if it doesn't lower that I am going to have to take more and the next pills are going to cost me over 200 a month . I can't afford this kind of money and my pressure is steadily rising . I don't know what else to do or how to lower it . My friends want me to go in because they are scared I am going to take a massive heart attack but I really can't afford the medication as I not only take medication for this but also for a couple of other healh problems I have . I honestly don't know a lot about blood pressure and could really use some good tips on how to lower one's pressure .

I did discuss this with my doctor in the past but she didn't give me anything much other then to illiminate the stress , try to quit smoking and to stop eating salt .
I don't eat salt , have tried to cut back on smoking but can't illiminate stress as I don't go looking for it . Things are stressful but that is our situation and I have agreed to talk to someone but that isn't reducing any of the stress in my life . I only found out a couple of days ago that walking is supposed to help so I went for a walk yesterday but my pressure was way back up again today when I got up . I don't weigh much as I am only 113 pounds so I don't want to lose more weight .

You are stressing about your blood pressure, so no wonder you cannot get rid of the problem. Another user on myLot is 5 or six weeks into her quit smoking plan, and she did it with Wellbutrin. Moderate exercise, like walking, at first. Eat oatmeal, or oat based cold cereals, the more whole grain the better. Eat apples, raw, peels on. Eat bananas. Taking a very good multivitamin with minerals. Drink orange juice. An imbalance between sodium (salt, salty foods) and potassium orange juice, bananas) does cause blood pressure problems. Finally, our friends from India would tell you to meditate, and take yoga classes.I would tell you to pray, or practice some form of faith to calm yourself. Good luck, keep us posted.

My husband also have a high blood pressure long time ago but you know what he did simply he eat fruits and vegetables always. Exercise also every other day and eat helthy foods. Less meat or very little meat, less sweet and less salt. He is now very healthy and trying not to eat unhealthy foods.

I've seen a lot of really good replies here. I am not a doctor and am no expert, but I've dealt with a lot of heart problems in my family. I don't think anyone mentioned potassium. Potassium, when used in combination with medicines, diet & excersize, and other modifications, can really help lower blood pressure. If you are already taking a "water pill", you should definately be on a potassium supplement, as they can really deplete your body's potassium levels. The number one thing to do for your blood pressure, though, is to quit smoking. It is very hard, but nothing else will compare to te results you can get just by doing that. Good luck! And if yor unsure about potassium, please talk to your doctor.

I am on water pills but take nothing for Pottassium , would this have anything to do with bananas by any chance just because my doctor did mention that with the medication I was on that I should be eating a banana or have a glass of Orange Juice a day and I didn't understand why ?
You are right about the smoking and I really wish I could quit and have confidence that someday I will be able to just right now I have so much going on I know I would never be able to do it .
Thank you for your response .

Yes, the orange juice and banana would be for potassium. At least one banana and one glass of orange juice are okay, but it wouldn't hurt to take in a little more. I wish you luck in all that you do try, and hope it works for you. High blood pressure can really wreak havoc on your most all of your body's systems, especially if it is uncontrolled. As for the smoking, I've found that having some kind of support can really help out. No one medicine or method is right for everyone, but having someone be there for you while you're trying can make all the difference in the world. There are lots of support forums online, too. Check out QuitNet. You know that you should quit and you want to, and that's a heck of a start already!

Ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist. It sounds like your diet isn't that bad, so for it to still be so high is concerning. Either there is a food high in salt in your diet that you don't realize or perhaps you've gone over board & you're not getting enough salt. Although most people with high blood pressure should limit their sodium intake, we still need some salt in our diet.
The new medication may be available in a generic, ask your doctor. And make sure your doctor knows that you are paying cash for your medications, he may know of another medication that's similar & less money, or of a program that can assist you with the expense.

I am already taking a generic brand and my doctor is at a loss of what to tell me as she knows our finacial sitaution but says there is not much she can do to help us out .
It is possible that I am eating foods that have too much salt content as I didn't realize that foods from a can were high in salt and a friend was telling me that they were really high . I also didn't realize that we still needed some salt inour diet though either so you have given me some new information .
Thank you for your response .

Believe it or not you are not alone and there are five things that you can do right now to help lower your blood pressure without taking expensive medication. Guidelines for lowering blood pressure include being smoke free as nicotine can drastically raise blood pressure and it takes at least an hour for it to subside; eat healthy which means more fruits and vegetables. By eating healthy and losing any excess weight you may be carrying you can drastically reduce your blood pressure; cut out salt from your food. There are many other seasonings to use with food to make it tasty; Exercise. All you need to do really is take a walk every day to help lower blood pressure and keep you fit. Taking a wholistic approach to this may keep you away from expensive medication. Good luck!

I apologize if someone has already said this (I did not read through ALL the responses), but look into the DASH diet. You should be able to find it online for free or books on it at the library.

Always watch your diet. Avoid stress, drink decaffeinated coffee. Try to follow the 8 glasses of water a day thing. It really does help. And sleep very well and just do more relaxing activities. Also, you might want to check out chinese or Filipino stores that sell herbal teas that really does lower blood pressure. But of course before using it, always consult your doctor. My grandfather also has the same problem, he's pretty stubborn with his medications but with a little encouragement and support he's able to maintain his blood pressure now. I really hope your condition would improve. :) Take care and God bless.

I would like to be able to check out the Chinese or Filipino stores but will not find any of them in my area . I didn't know this about the water though and I only have water about once a year if that as I don't like the taste but it would be worth trying to drink a bit more if it would help . I also don't drink any coffee or tea as I only drink Pepsi . Stress is hard to avoid as I have a lot going on in my life right now and would love to be stressfree but this is not possible at the moment because we are not in the best of situations reguarding money matters . Thank you for your response .

I'm not a doctor, but it's in our bloodline to have high blood pressure. It's been a problem with running in the family eversince. My uncle and aunts have the same problem. My father too has high blood pressure especially when he is stressed out at work. He has a heart problem since a child but was able to overcome because of change in lifestyle. Always watch out on what we eat, regular exercise and of course trust in God. If you ever need help I can always recommend a doctor I know here in Subic.

It is true about it being in the bloodline as it runs on both my mom and my dad's side of the family and on my dad's side they all have severe heart problems that I am only finding out about this year and that each of them was my age when the problems first started . Most of them have already passed away as a result and this is kind of scaring me as I never knew any of this information and my dad isn't doing well himself either .
Thank you for offereing to recomment a doctor in Subic but I would never be able to get there but still think it was very kind of you to offer one .
Thank you for your response .

You should avoid fat and colestorel food first to keep your pressure lower always. When you feel high pressure you can drink small tamerind soup or any sour item like mango pickle. Raw garlic also great help to keep pressure lower. Moreover, sleeping pill you can take if your sleep is not much during pressure. Rest also can turn your pressure low when it high.

Apart from medication , I would advise you to put a strict watch on your dietary habits . Eat less of high calorie foods, lesser salt intake. Walk long distance at lest 20 minutes a day. Make sure that you lead a life free from tensions. Over exerting can be harmful. It is also best if do not concern too much about your present predicament .

well, my advice is that you should be watchful of your diet. don't eat too much meat; fish, vegetables, and fruits would be healthier. exercise regularly, but don't overdo it; always monitor your blood pressure; don't stress yourself and don't get too excited on things as it might trigger a heart attack if your BP happens to be high.consult your doctor regularly and no matter what or how much medicines you take, if you don't have self discipline, i don't know if you'll ever get better...one more thing - don't eat too much...
