Do you use scissors to cut coupons?

Singapore
June 7, 2007 1:42pm CST
Wife: Do you see it? Husband: What? Wife: Where is it? Husband: WHERE is WHAT? Wife: My scissors!! Husband: What do you want them for? The wife picked up the newspaper and pointed to a bright red coupon that screamed 70% OFF. It was a discount coupon for yet *another* sale. Guess what the husband did? He took the page from her, grabbed a biscuit tin nearby and tore the coupon off using a side of the tin. How ingenious, isn't it? :P For me, I don't keep scissors in my room. I keep a penknife instead for use when I need to cut really straight edges. Most of the times though, especially when it comes to e.g. sale or lucky draw coupons, I will just grab an object with straight edges and use it. I don't even bother with finding a straight ruler. What about you? Do you use scissors when you need to cut such things? Or do you use a penknife? Or a ruler? Or a biscuit tin? Or a... ? Do share your thoughts. ;-)

I use scissors to cut coupons and anythign else that scissors can be used to cut. They are safer then using a knife, the last time I opened a package with a knife the knife slipped and I cut myself.

An exacto knife is great for precise cutting, its also called a utility knife or X-acto knife. It's a short sharp razor like blade mounted on a pen-like aluminum body. Can be used for crafting, paper, photo trimming/cutting, modelmaking all sorts of hobbies actually. The most common blade size is the #11 but there are different sizes.

Scissors for me. Nice neat edges and quckly done. Taking a chance with this discussion however only 56 minutes could make it a good shot for me not to be buried. My scissors have a drawer by the chair where I cut from the Sunday paper or where ever I get the coupons. Organized!!

Glad that I bring you mirth. I don't like to far into a discussion where I cannot find and respond again if it calls for it. We are not told what page we are on when there is a notification now to return to the discussions. That would help. Thanks for responding to me.

Willowlady, you are so funny! :P Why would you ever be buried? I would be able to find you anyway. This discussion was posted out of my usual timing - I think it just missed the main boat. Looks like it is just the perfect timing for you! haha...

I use scissors. It is what gets me the best straight edge. I don't know why I care if my coupons look 'right' but I guess I do.

With my luck if I tried to tear it out, I'd rip the middle of the coupon. On the other hand, I've seen my sister do it with great precision. Maybe it's an art. : )

I don't cut coupons at all. I don't get the paper, so I don't have an coupons to cut. I don't want to pay for paper delivery, because I rarely read newspapers. And I don't buy magazines or anything. i try to reduce the amount of paper in the house, because it is only wasteful to me, and ends up in the recycle bin. I do manage to have a pair of scissors in almost any room of the house, so I rarely have to search for them, but I don't need to use them very often, either.

Not really, I've just accumulated a lot of scissors over the years. I have different shears in the kitchen than I do in the garden for harvesting leafy greens. Different scissors in the bathroom for cutting hair, than the scissors I use to cut wrapping paper. I don't even remember where they all came from!

I have to use scissors because I am the worlds worst coupon clipper. I can't do it even if it is one of the ones that you can just pull out. If by chance I can't find the scissors and I see something i really want, I will fold it along the edges and crease it and then very carefully try to rip it along the line.

Yep. I hear this all the time, including from my own mouth. The scissors are meant to be kept in the top, big drawer in the kitchen. Often they are missing. They could be anywhere... in my step daughters bedroom; the lounge room... the kids think they can use the scissors, but not put them away. If they are not easily found, I go on a rampage. I have been known to use a ruler to tear paper, not knives though.

I hate it too when people take things from where they belong and do not return them.

i always keep some pairs of scissors around to cut some things. not only for coupons are these things being used. i use the scissors even in opening those candies and biscuits which are packaged in plastics and aluminum foils. it is much easier to make use of scissors as they are already made available for our use. so why make life difficult when it has already been made so easy? but since you have introduced this idea here, i might not be too scissors dependent anymore from this time onwards.

I've been known to use the fold and tear method from time to time, If it's possible. But I also have a pen knife by my desk, and scissors in the kitchen . . .

I just use my bare hands. I would often fold the paper along the edges and then exercise my skill on tearing. Unless the paper is rather crumbled, the piece that comes out is often quite neat. Of course, there are exceptions at times, when the paper is too tough to be tore nicely. I would use scissors as using any other would not do the trick nicely as well.

If I were to cut a coupon, I'll do it with whatever I find be it penknife, ruler, ball point longitudinal edge, scissor or any sharp object. I can even use my finger to work as ruler:-) but only if I am alone. When my wife is around, I try to respect her feeling about tearing things roughly, as she is a very systematic lady and try to do things with proper manners:-)So you know...

We keep our scissors in a drawer in the kitchen. When we finish with them we put them back in the drawer. We always know where the scissors are and we use the scissor when we want to cut out something.

I definitely use scissors when I am cutting out coupons. Even if the edges are perforated for tearing, I still usually use scissors because the perforations aren't good enough. I feel that if I tear the coupon it will not be accepted. Every coupon I clip gets a scissor snip.

Yea, looking at some perforations, I don't even know why they bother doing it since they are not "tearable" (I have seen good ones though).

Hey LW, I keep a pair of scissors in my kitchen drawer for things like that-even to open cereal LOL but if I need a coupon & don't have them handy & it doesn't have perforated edges I'll just tear it out. +'s 2 U :D

Hello lordwarwizard, I use scissors or the edge of the table to cut coupons, if I can't find the scissors. The edge of the table works too. A tin works too to keep them together. Peace:-)

I never use coupons. I don't know why but everytime I go to the shop or wherever and someone tells me to use a coupon, I do not like to be seen using a coupon. Reason being, I do not like to be seen as a charity case or a cheapskate or whatever. lol I know it sounds weird but Im complicated.
