Hello.
Somethings to note: The center piece of each of 6 sides is fixed ie u should solve the color with respect to the center piece.
1st you choose a color that u wan to solve first (eg yellow). Try to form a cross using yellow, always try to keep in mind that you should also match the adjacent side center color that means (blue-center, blue edge, yellow edge, yellow center, yellow edge, green edge, green center) U can also use the 1/4 turn to adjust the order of the yellow pieces and turn back 1/4 after your yellow pieces matches the corresponding sides.
2nd solving the corners, position a corner piece containing yellow at front right bottom. Try to use either right side turn or front side turn to match the yellow and turn it back.
Basically, the thing is to solve the cube and the adjacent sides at one go. And try to think its a two-color or three color piece and it must match the center piece when it's solved.
Hope to see your progress soon. :)

Back in the 80's I got one, I played with it for three days and figured it out. now days, since I know the combination it's easy to do it in five to ten minutes. the secret is to make it checkered on all sides. On mine the white is opposite the blue, green is opposite the yellow, orange is opposite the red. Each opposite has to be checkered. From that point move the center row so it lines up and makes two solid of one color and one of the other and do that with each color before too long you will have completed the puzzle. The first dozon times it is hard, til you get the hang of it. Good luck solving!
Peace!
