i am often told my son for study to serve up a cup of water or snack for guests that come to my house, whati is your opinion ?

Yes, it is right. He should learn to be polite and to do something he can do.

Good attitude, guests are treated like gods in some asian countries. Here in South India, when a guest arrives, he will be given a tumbler of water to wash his feet then a glass of butter milk or jaggery water to quench his thirst.
