I really am clueless about the internet even though I have been on here for years and years. I would like to buy a website or a domain name. Are they one in the same? Where do I go to buy one from a reputable company?

I'd recommend 1&1, they have pretty affordable and good quality services. Go to www.1and1.com and let us know how you liked it.
You need to buy a domain name (say, www.name.com) plus a hosting plan for your page. The domain name registration is usually paid for one or more years, while the hosting plan is paid monthly.
What kind of site are you building?

Okay this might sound dumb to you but I dont' know what kind of site I will build or for what. I only have the name in mind. What will I do with it I am not sure. Should I have something to sell or can it just be personal. I do have another site in mind but it is for business purposes. I just have done nothing about it either for the same reason. I don't know enough to do anything. That is why I thought I would start with the personal one first, just for fun maybe turn it into something I can make money on but learn get to know what the heck I am doing. Then I will go for the second one. I will post my question about that in a second discussion. Oh and I will go right after I post to check out the site 1&1. I am pretty sure I saw that on my search the other night. I am too nervous to pick something so I need people's view on it. Whether these sites are good or bad to deal with. Okay thanks for your response I will get back to you about 1&1.

I've found it's quite common to want to build a website and not knowing its main purpose. When I built mine I was quite sure of the main topic but had no idea on what content exactly it would have. It's a good idea to start brainstorming and writing down your ideas, etc.
I asked what kind of website because if it's for personal purposes you could start with a blog. Blogs are great ways of getting traffic for your main page, so it won't be a waste of time starting a personal blog.
If you're interested in learning website development I strongly recomend you to visit www.gnc-web-creations.com, read the articles and visit the training center. It's a great free resource that I hope I knew 1 year ago when I started my website.
I'd encourage you to start a blog if you don't have one already (a free host would be fine for the meanwhile) and play with html scripts and get used to the whole thing.
