I always thought that this was America, so why is it that when you call a business that the voice on the other end always promts by saying " If you want instructions in english please press one " Any body else ever wondered the same thing.

Yes, that is quite annoying. Since this is the "melting pot" we allow people to come into our country and speak different languages and not make them learn English. I don't agree with that. If you live in the US, you have to speak the language. We should not make consessions for those who do not.

I think they say they don't know English when it benefits them. It is like ym ex-husband grandmother. She has been in this country more than 40 years and she knows enough English to get by, but if she doesn't want to listen she tells you she doesn't understand. If other people around her know German, she prefers to speak in German.

I go along with that comment. I asked my neighbors kid if the knew the Pledge Of Aligance they asked what was that.I understand some of the older peoples problems with the language but why does my granddaughter have to lose her heritage just because some one else wants to live in ths country. Just how many consenions must we Americans make are we just going to give away our country? We are already making consetions in our schools our jobs in even in our religions.

But you know when I was working at Wal Mart if you said anything wrong they knew enough english to go tell on you. Example a person came up to me and asked if i spoke spanish and i replied NO THIS AMERICA I SPEAK ENGLISH( I guesse he didnot find my respose very funny)But if you short them one penny on their pay or change they dam sure know it and they will tell you about it.
