What were they Thinking? (number two)

Carpeting in kitchens and baths! Our entire house was carpeted by previous owners. Just what were they thinking in carpeting the kitchen and bath? They must not have had children! after 7 years of looking at this awful kitchen carpet full of stains and ugliness I had it! I went mad with a utility knife and ripped the blasted thing up! Oh my word, what was underneath it! black mold all over the kitchen flooring (cement floors were under the carpet.) I am glad I wore a mask to do this task. I poured bleach over the cement, I hope that suffices to kill the mold.

WOW! The previous owners must have been pretty stupid or smoking something the day they carpeted the kitchen and bathroom lol! that is the dumbest thing i have heard of in a while! i can just imagine the stains you are talking about, especially with kids! and i guess all the spills over the years seeped through and hence the mold. You could try a product called exit mold, we have it here in australia, not sure about where you are though. One thing i am suprised at though... why didnt you rip the carpet up sooner!!?? lol

The last two houses we lived in before this one had carpeting in the kitchen. The first one was so worn out, the padding on the back actually disintegrated into dust. It also smelled horribly of cat pee. We tore the carpet up, then the landlady was mad, saying there was nothing wrong with the carpet and that it most certainly didn't smell like cat pee. It did though, she was just so used to it she couldn't smell it. We did replace the rug with beautiful vinyl tile, which appeased her, but she never did reimburse us, so we refused to pay her the last months rent, since she also had our security deposit. The last one was just ugly and stained, but then we bought our own house and I have vinyl floors in the kitchen and baths. I would never put carpeting in either room, that is just insane.

I don't think the bleach will completely kill the mold. I've never understood either why people will carpet a bathroom and kitchen. It is so much easier to mop something up when there is something spilled then to have to drag out a carpet cleaner. Just imagine if the toilet over flowed or something the mess you would have then. YUCK! I think someone above me mentioned the KILZ. My mom and dad used this when they moved into a house and it worked great.

thank you for the affirmation regarding kilz! lol, as I read your post I did *JUST* imagine the toilet overflow. oh yuck yuck yuck! the kids splashing in the tub was enough incentive for me to pull it up.

I know how you feel we purchased a house last fall with carpet in the bathrooms now I wonder who would have carpet in the bathroom as I look at it I think of molds and spores and GERMS! YUK.Untill I can get it replaced I clean it like once a month and feel that isnt enough. I dont have kids at home and there is carpet in the kitchen as well I dont mind that so much as it is new and we dont spill things but we will probley change this as well.

When people put carpet in kitchens and bathrooms, I believe to be cheap, I do think "what in the blazes were they thinking?" It is absolutely ridiculous do put carpet anywhere that water is. You need to go out and get something called KILZ I think that's how it's spelled. Go to your local hardware/do it yourself store and ask for it. My husband used to use it working in apartment maintenance for years. Whenever they pulled up a carpet they used it. It even covers cat spray smell !! It has a white color I believe, and people use it as a primer before painting as well, it covers everything and no bleed through !!

oh! thank you for this advice! I have used kilz to paint over paneling I had no idea I could use it on the cement as a treatment. Do you know which kind of kilz I should be getting? oil latex etc?

Hubby says use latex because you can use any paint over latex. And you should seal coat it after you paint it if that is the route you're going.

I am wondering if I can just paint the cement a nice deep red or perhaps black and then pour some thompson's water seal over that.

Cement has a high % of moisture...so remember that moisture is all the way thorugh it, with those budding mold spores...and the moisture will enter your house. You need the mold professionally removed and some ceramic tile or something put down, but that will be one hard, back-killing floor...so wear sneakers when cooking and standing at the sink.

We saw a lot of this when we were searching for a home in Pittsburgh. The best one was a home with yellow, green, and orange shag in the bathroom. It was horrifying! The carpet was actually matted together in clumps of nastiness. That wonderful beauty of a house also had a 70's style avocado green kitchen with a built in dinette :)

I could never imagine anyone having carpeting in their kitchen or bathrooms. That is a totally weird place to have carpeting and would never do such a thing. They must have lost their minds. Glad that you tore it up and replaced it and fixed it up. I would probably do the same thing. I would prefer having vinyl or tiling in my kitchen or bathroom floors. Bleach is the best thing to use for mold.

I think its bad to have carpeting in the bathroom. My bathroom would have been changed quickly, as my daughter use to get the floor wet regularly. All the spills while my daughter learned to cook and that carpet would have been ruined quickly when she learned to cook. I'm certain there was no children in your home. Sorry to hear you have mold. I expect the bathroom is worse than the kitchen. Good luck with the future changes in your kitchen and bathroom.

OH MY GOSH, I know what you mean! When we were house searching, we noticed that there were many older homes that had carpeting in the kitchen and/or bath. That just seems absured to me. Why carpet an area that you KNOW will be receiving spills, drips, and moisture! I certainly wouldn't stop at just some bleach for that mold though. The spores are likely deep into the pores of the concrete. Can you KILZ it, then put down underlayment board and then a layer of tiling?

I could not think of anything more disgusting...Thats horrible. But it did remind me of a neighbour that I had about 7 years. They had 3 kids under 10 years and grey carpet in the kitchen....I nearly vomited when I went in there one day (1st and only time). the carpet was black and had squished food in it. (sorry about the details), but it was a new house and they had only been there for 3 months, what was going through their mind to put carpet in a kitchen.

That must have been horrible putting up with that carpeting. It must have smelled bad, being in those rooms with all the dampness. I'll bet you're happy to be rid of it. What a difference it will make.

I am with you 1000% on that. Carpeting in the kitchen and bathroom makes no sense at all. The way my menfolk pee all over he room (I caught one of them peeing into the bathtub last night and he didn't even manage to hit a target that big), I shudder to think how absoloutly gross it would be after their first trip in. And the kitchen with all the spilled juice and bits of rice sticking into the fabric? Maybe it looks good in a magazine photo, but it is so impractical.

Poor you mate, that sounds uber gross. Imagine the germs harboring there. What will you put there instead. Carpet in the kitchen is just asking for trouble, an insane idea. In one of my homes there was carpeting in the bathroom but it was special stuff you could buy by the metre for bathrooms. It was nylon and it wasn't attached to the floor just cut to fit and I could take it up and wash it. I really liked it, especially in winter. It became a bit ratty eventually so I chucked it and laid tiles...all by myself and it looked really good. (Actually, Dad helped me to cut some tiles)
