We all know Snape is a person Harry loathes and despises. But the book shows us Harry using his book to help him in class and Harry actually defending him to his friends.
Does this mean that if circumstances were different Snape could have been soemone Harry Potter would call a friend? Even someone he would look up to?

I believe that if Harry's father hadn't teased Snape in school and just befriended him, Snape's life could possibly a lot different than it is now. I think with the torture that Snape endured, Snape then turned to Voldemort to seek revenge on those who were associated with James Potter and those who are related to him.
If James Potter hadn't teased Snape, then Snape would try his best to help Harry whenever possible. He probably not turned to Voldemort for acceptance. I think that he would be more kind to Harry.

I disagree. It said in one of the books (which book escapes me), that Snape already had a knowledge of the Dark Arts when he entered the school. I doubt the bullying he endured at the hands of James Potter and his friends succeeded in doing anything but wanting to get back at James by making his son miserable. That, or he assumes Harry is probably no different from his father.
Besides, it hinted in the 5th book that Snape might have endured some level of abuse by his father. This is probably the more likely reason he turned to Voldemort. Unfortunate events made him hateful.

Well, had Harry's father not have bullied Snape, and if Snape had not been so hateful and unwilling to assume the son was not completely like the father, then perhaps.
However, judging by Snape's personality and overall bitterness, because of all the troubles he had even before he came to Hogwarts, the chances of him ever becoming a role model to Harry is slim to none.
