I recently went to a second hand store out of curiosity. To my pleasant surprise, they do have a few good buys. Like a good just serviced APRICA pram, which would cost me $550, i bought it for $16!! That's a steal to me. They also had golf clubs set which normally costs about $900+ this store was selling it for merely $280. Have you ever been to a second hand store? What was your best buy? Those who have not been to one, what's stopping you?

I almost always buy second hand. Not only does it save tons of money, it's better for the environment, by keeping those things out of landfills & reducing our needs for new materials. A win-win situation as far as I can see. It's not quite buying from a second hand store, but my used car is clearly the best second-hand purchase I've ever made. It's old, and I've had it for about 2 years now. I paid $400 for it and I've put about another $300 into the brake system & assorted other little problems. It gets great mileage, is big enough for my large family and I've spent less than what a person with a brand new car would spend in 3 months of car payments to keep it running for 2 years.

Eden, you really did have a good buy on that mini van.

The car is a mini-van, seats 8. I have 3 children, my eldest is in a committed relationship & has a child of his own and I am expecting in October. Although it rarely happens that we all drive somewhere together these days, if we wanted to there'd be myself & my partner in the front, my daughter and the two car seats in the middle, my son & his partner in the back seat; and still one more spot for the baby on the way and I could even safely fit my dog in the space behind the last seat :)

Thrift store have goods given to them to sell. a consignment is selling an item and getting a percentage. I have a shop and you have the pram you want to sell. I'll sell it for you and I get 10 percent of the asking price.

I also go to second hand store. They have nice stuff at lowest price, we called that kind of store "SURPLUS". You may find items which is already second hand or items which is just an old stock. YOu save a lot of money from your pocket compared of buying a new one.

Hi a_ce_e , "SURPLUS" is definitely my kind of store. I normally buy old stock toys to give out as party favors or presents at my kids birthday parties. Definitely saves a TON of money. Thank you for your reply. - Lyn

Web - This is prettier to look at.
Hi dentidle, i know what you mean. I've been to one of those kind of shops. There was one Salvation Army store that i went to. I don't believe that they actually sold broken toys, the place was a mess literally and there was dust on almost everything. That was terrible. I always go shopping for brand new stuff when i want to buy a present or a gift. Where's your best place to shop? - Lyn

Yes we do have Ikea (2 outlets) and Carrefour (3 outlets) in Singapore. As a matter of fact, Shopping Malls are all we have in Singapore. The latest one is Vivo City. It's located by the waterfront and opposite the resort island of Sentosa. You can also see the Sun Cruises ships berthing next door as well. Vivo City also showcases sculptures from international artists. This ensures you have an artistic experience while you shop. Many sculptures surround the grounds. You won't miss them. Vivo City is so huge that they have outdoor water play area as well as wading pools on its roof top. It's floor space is equivalent to about 15 football fields. You should go to Vivo City if you love Shopping. - Lyn

It depends. When one can afford well, a distaste for this second hand goods is not uncommon. But when one can't the second hand stores, are treasure troves. As for me, I'm in the latter.

Hi mulanmatu, that statement clearly indicates and clarifies your stand. I do know those kinds of people as well. They brag about almost everything. From their Louis Vuitton bag, to their ski vacation to their branded clothes and accessories. They only need people to go oooooo and aaaaaaaa when they start telling their stories. Thank you for clarifying and replying. - Lyn

Ok, let me qualify my statement. I said "it's not uncommon" for people who can afford new goodies to have a "distaste" for the second-hand stuffs. Now, in that statement, I think it's obvious that I am not generalizing to the whole. And my claim speaks as much about an attitude as much as i speak about this people. Now, I am saying that because I have few acquaintances in Class A and B who really have such attitude. For one, in our place, used clothes from Hong Kong abounds in the flea market here. Alhough this stuffs are of good quality, they say these stuffs can be source of disease, skin diseases in particular. Plus, so what if u didnt spend much for the product? A D&G stuff is still a D&G stuff and once u buy them, that's still a statement of your liking for this goodies.

I love second hand stores. I consider them to be a form of entertainment or a treasure hunt. You just never know what you will find in there. Most of my favorite things have come from a second hand store [thrift store]. I also buy things to decorate the house at the second hand stores. I have bought books, collectibles, furniture, clothes, you name it and I have probably bought it used. New stuff is a little out of my budget these days so if I want something new, I buy it used! LOL. We buy a lot of toys for the kids [and me!]. One of my total favorite things to buy at one nearby second hand store is a toy grab bag. It usually costs around $4.00 or so and it's a pretty good-size bags of smaller misc. toys. I have found some really great stuff in those toy grab bags. In fact, I wish that I had one to go through right now! I am having toy grab bag withdrawal!

We have a couple second hand stores in our town, and I do go to them. They are great for clothes for the kids since they seem to grow out of them so quick. And sometimes I find some good decorating stuff for the house. I found a nice pitcher and bowl one time, and I think that is my best buy. I payed $3.00 for it.

My parents taught me what a good bargain shopping at second hand stores can be. Its one of the ways that they were able to raise nine children on just over a thousand dollars a month. That includes bills, food and all. I buy a few things brand new but most stuff I will buy use. Except for our beds there isn't a new piece of furniture in my house. I paid just twenty five dollars for my couch and love seat, normally cost was eight hundred. I buy most of the children's clothing at thrift stores or yard sales. When you only pay a quarter for a shirt you don't mind as much if the children get it stained up.

Hi KissThis, you should count yourself lucky that your parents taught you about good bargains at second hand stores. My parents taught me that good items are covered and stored away and those are the best items to buy. It took me years before i even stepped into a second hand store. I started off with second hand bookstores only when i started to work. I tried full fledged 2nd hand store after i got married. I always get a thrill to see any good buys. About the children's shirt, i don't believe you actually paid a quarter! Do they have online stores? I'll definitely buy in bulk! LOL - Lyn

I love going to second hand stores. I found my kitchen table, four chairs, and a new computer desk at one about a month ago and got all 3 things for just $30! I priced the things at WalMart and the same table and chairs were $99 and the computer desk was $59 on sale. I also buy almost all my sons clothes, my clothes, and my husbands clothes at thrift stores. The only things I buy new are under garments and socks and shoes. I also find lots of crafts items and just knick knacks that I do not need but I want! LOL! Happy shopping!

I usually visit the second hand shop to see if I can find something really old, something worthy. But so far, I have not bought anything special from the second hand stores. Because its really rare to find some good things there. May be if we need some products for really cheap money, they this may be the good choice.

I have to admit that I do not go to these thrift stores or goodwill stores. They seem to be very pricey for used items. I do go to yard sales during the summer. Here you will find great buys. I bought clothes for me there for like a quarter each. I have bought dvd movies for $1.00 each. I love meeting new people and getting bargains. What is one mans junk is anothers treasure. Last week I bought the television scene it dvd game brand new for $1.00 I could not believe my luck. This game runs like $30.00 to $40.00 in the store. I will be going next saturday too to find more stuff.

I go to second hand stores and we have ONE good one here in my City. One could really get real good bargains there including books. I seldom buy new books since I could just buy them second hand and all those of my favorite authors too. My best buy were tables. chairs, mirror, books and magazines. For me they are always best buys.

Just be careful in what you've bought in a second hand stores, they're might be some immitations of the products that why the price is much lesser than the original product. I was once a victim of this scenario, I bought a gucci bag which is much 80% cheaper than the original product. After a week and a half, it worn out. So be careful.

I do like buying clothes at second hand stores, which in the Philippines, are called 'Ukay ukay.' I get a lot of good bargains and as long as they're washed properly are much more fashionable than those I can get for a lot more in malls.
