Holding hands in public, scandalous or sweet?

I've heard some people honest tell a couple to 'get a room' simply because they were holding hands while walking down the street. I used to see more couples doing this simple and casually intimate thing, but I rarely do nowadays.
Any insights? Is holding hands in public too 'risque'? I for one think anyone that finds it problematic to do such is simply not getting laid often enough.

*nods* It is very brave. Usually men have a harder time of such things than women, but even I have been yelled at by onlookers for daring to hold hands with a female partner in public. Something about that does make it seem extra sweet, that you care enough about someone that you're risking everything to show your affection.

I find it adorable when anyone, regardless of prefference holds hands as a couple. My homophobia only rears it's head if such young lovers come my way and decide they want to spice up their relationship by adding ME into the mix.
i'm a little shy for such things if it's two females, two guys and change the shy to nauseated. lol

Holding hands in public are very sweet...I wish to see it more often that I am able to see it so far....hmm…maybe I am blind…
I wish someone wants to hold mine....I am always with less romantic guys....
Help! Where did my romance go?

I'm sure transdisc and jimbo could find it for you. They seem to have a good solid handle on simple and sweet romantic gesture not involving any sort of risque or perverted measures.

I think holding hands in public is great. My husband and I do it all of the time and I see many couples doing it. I don't see a darn thing wrong with it. In fact, I think MORE couples should do it. I believe it is the small things - like hand holding - that help keep a relationship between two people strong.

I want to be all snuggly with my aly bear too. We have a distance issue, a mild one, but we're making plans to get together some soon. We're both so busy in our lives but we're trying to get some quality hand holding time.

I love seeing people hold hands in public, I think it's adorable and sweet. I know I hold hands with my husband a lot when we're out! Most of the times people say it's cute that we still hold hands even though we've been together for years, but I have heard people saying it was too intimate. I think that's a weird and silly way of looking at it.
Personally I agree with your idea of the problem with people who complain about holding hands. =p

It is very sweet that you still hold hands after a few years. I'd not wanna stop such little snuggly things, because a relationship to me is about more than 'let's git it oooon..'

There is a huge difference between a couple holding hands and a couple that's making out on the street.
I think holding hands is endearing and sweet, especially when I see an elderly couple still holding hands after many years. I like when my husband holds my hand when we are out, it gives me a sense of belonging.

I think it's sweet when people hold hands too. Some actions in public might be too much, but that's why we have drunk tanks. ^.^

I guess it depends on the culture. There are some ultra-conservative cultures that condemn holding hands, and there are cultures who don't, especially in the west, wherein people who are just out on a date and not in a serious relationship hold hands as a sign of affection.
Personally, I think holding hands in public is romantic and sweet, especially if you're doing it with someone you genuinely care for.

I definitely agree, it is romantic and sweet. Bringing up other cultures, i'm entirely certain there are bound to be a few cultures where someone could get stoned for this, or lashed with a whip. That is what really bothers me.

I think holding hands is romantic. I think any couple should be able to walk down the street hand in hand without being harassed.

I agree, people should not feel the need to be negative about someone simply showing love.

I really don't see any problem in holding hands in public because all it does is show people that you are committed to the other person, it's the most innocent form of public display that you are together, it should not be seen as scandalous or anything of the kind, i can think of a lot worse that goes on. Carry on I say!

You're right it IS the most innocent form of public affection there is. If holding hands is too risque the world is doomed to prude-dom

I think it is sweet. I see many older couples, ones in there 70's-80's, walking around holding hand and I think it is so romantic. Although I have heard other people make a comment like they are only doing that so they don't get lost or other such silly talk. I think it is a good way to keep a litle spark of romance alive.

Well at 70 to 80 I think it's probably both. Snuggly romantic moment AND not getting lost. Makes perfect sense really.. hold my hand so I don't get lost without you honey. I'll never let your hand go dear.. i'd not want to lose you.
and neither meaning geography

Sometimes my husband and I hold hands in public. We don't do it on a regular basis, but we do. I don't think it is bad. I think it is so sweet to see it. It makes me think that those couples are truly happy with each other. I especially like the older couples holding hands, I know that they have been through the wringer with each other and after all the went through, they still have enough love to show their affection.

:)) should I get my boxing gloves?;;)
The idea is that people should know what they can do on the street... I mean in their own house they can do whatever they what for what I care... But on the street!?!?!? it's a public place, man... so you cannot say whenever you want something like "get a room" cos it's idiotic and denotes the insight frustration;)
Good luck my friend... and kick some buts if you have to:)

People have a right to their opinions even if they are of course wrong.. (some say an opinion can't be wrong.. I say that's their opinion... and they are wrong. ha!)
I'd rather show the prudish freaks they're wrong, but the best way to do that I suppose would to simply give them something to REALLY complain about... involving tongues and the free hand roaming a bit.

well its not that intense to hold both hands in public.. it only signifies that the couple or partners are ready to show to the public and that they're sure for each other.. that only shows you love your partner... but why are these people so judgmental? aren't they jealous cause you're taken? lol

for me no..its only a gesture that you really like the person! you can hold hands with your friends and it does not imply anything except that just best friends! maybe its how people interpret such acts ..

This is true, you don't even have to be in an intimate relationship, people who are friends hold hands. Kids hold hands all the time.

Hi silvernutbar. I think that public displays of affection are not only beautiful but an essential part of any relationship. Beautiful because you love each other enough to show the world and essential because I think it's the little things like hand holding that really tells your significant other just how much you love and care for them. Oh by the way...I would hold your hand any day. love ya much...have a nice day=)

I think holding hands is sweet and not at all scandalous. I mean, I could see if a couple were playing tonsil hockey on the street or something, but holding hands doesn't put anything in anyones face and I think it is a shame that it has gotten to be such an unfamiliar occurence.

I know I feel the same way. People get penalized for showing genuine affection in public and folks wonder why the world gets a little worse everyday
