Do you recall the first book you learned how to read?I guess I was about 5 yrs old when mother took us to the library and I pulled on her skirt to let me check out "The Pokey Little Puppy" (aka Poky) I really loved the illustrations. She would read me that story over and over, she was so patient a mother. Finally I committed all the words to memory and could "read" it for myself. I felt so accomplished. I would point to each word as I said it - and thought I was reading them. Oh how I loved that little book, she checked it out many times that year. I guess I probably never actually read the book, but perhaps I did begin to recognize some words by sight from having memorized the story."And down they went to see, roly-poly, pell-mell, tumble-bumble, 'till they came to the edge of the green grass, and there they stopped short."

I remember reading "Where The Wild Things Are" and "Goodnight Moon" as a child. I really enjoyed those books and would read them repeatedly.

I don´t remember my first book, I´m sure it was a Dr. Seuss. I also had the Pokey Little Puppy and I LOVED that book! :D THe first book I really remember reading is "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe when I was 6. I was only halfway through Grade One, but I had wanted to read so badly that I learned within a few days. We were at someone´s house, they had grown kids and my mom commented on how much I loved to read. So the woman said she would lend me some books and took me to their study. They had a bunch of little kid books, but the ones that caught my eye were the Chronicles of Narnia, in a neat little box up higher. I asked to borrow them adn the woman just laughed and said, "Those are for big kids, sweetie." I insisted on seeing them and she finally took them down for me. I was fascinated by the picture on the front and begged to borrow the first book. She finally relented, but insisted that I take a bunch of baby books, too. Well, I read that book in a week and told my mom we had to go back and get the next one. I borrowed every one of those books and the woman was SO surprised that I could read them. She gave me the boxed set when I finished them and my mom still has them to this day!

I honestly don't remember the first book I read. I know I loved to read as a child and read many books. I do remember in the 4th grade I started reading biographies on the presidents wives, I read a biography about Elvis and The Little House books. I do remember as a smaller child having those read along books with the little 45 records. Cinderella, 2000 Leagues Under the Sea, Sleeping Beauty, The Black Hole and so on. My mom picked some strange ones hahaha!

When I was a child my mom would read to me, apparently I loved a book called "I'm so glad I'm Susie". "I can brush my hair, I can dress myself." My Mom would get tired of reading it all the time and would try to skip pages, and I'd make her go back and read them, because I had the book memorized. In first grade we had books like "My First Little Red Book" "My First Little Green Book", something along those lines. The teachers told us to take them home and read a couple of pages. Well, I wanted to see what happened, so I read the entire book in one night, I was so excited to get to move on to another one! But when I went to exchange it the next day, the teacher didn't believe me, so I had to carry around the book a few more weeks pretendng to still be reading it, when in my heart I was longing to go on to the others. After awhile the teacher saw me literally devouring all the reading material in the room, and she believed me then. They ran out of things for me to read, and had me start reading the film strips for the class. I've always loved to read. Now math...that's my downfall.

Sorry, I am 47 years old and my memory is not that long. However, I could read and write before I started to school. I really have no idea what the first book was. My mom used to write short stories for me to learn to read. But that has just been too long ago. LOl

I don't remember the first books I read at home but I remember my first reader at school. It was called something like A Pig Can Jig. I looked it up on the internet, but all the ones I saw listed were very modern and not the one I learned on. The beginner primers have really changed over the years!

I was a very young reader. I started reading Dr. Seuss books when I was 3 years old. A lot of people thought that I just memorized them, but then they would hand me one that I didn't own, and I could read it just fine as well.

my daughter was also a young reader... i can read type books at age 4 - small sight words at 3 and a half. She could spell a few words such as Ball when she was 2, but that may have been parroting. I think a lot more children could read early such as yourself if they were given the chance. my son was very slow to begin reading, he just could not grasp it. in second grade I was getting very flustered as i home educated him I felt such the failure... he had an interest in coins though, and I bought him a coin book of values etc... and refused to read it to him. That finally got him going on the reading. It was also helpful to teach interest in history and art.

My mom always reads us a story book when i and my siblings were little. I remember the first book i am trying to read before,it's entitled 'Children Around the World'. It has different kinds of stories that has a moral lessons. It is good for children to read. I still have that book until now. I only read those stories before word-by-word but now i read and end the whole story in just a few minutes.
