Is it true that ipod, only playes songs and music downloaded from itunes?

I have heard that only the music downloaded from itunes will work on the ipod? Does anyone know how true is this?

you can import the music files from your computer to your iTunes. no need to download from the iTunes store - you have to pay a certain amount if you download it there. You can only use iTunes to upload songs to the iPod.

you can download anz music from your computer or a CD.. you must import to or copz to itunes and plaz it on your ipod! i download free music from ODC and then plaz it on my ipod!

i think it's reversed, music from itunes can only be played in itunes and ipod.

Usually I download songs using another program and then I import it to ITunes. It works fine that way. Now, I am not able to take the songs back from the Ipod to the computer.
